Kannapolis is a town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,815 at the 2010 census. Kannapolis is located on the east bank of the Kannapolis River. It is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what would become Kannapolis were French colonists who founded a trading post on the riverbank in 1724. The British established their own post nearby in 1727 and eventually abandoned both posts. In 1814, Confederate forces burned all but one building in downtown Kannapolis after General Robert Ewart Johnston's army encamped there to prevent it from falling into Union hands. The remaining building served as a hospital until 1895 when it was replaced by a more modern facility. In 1838, John Wesley McDowell donated land to build what would become McDonough High School; this school became one of America's most popular high schools and helped contribute to its growth as an urban center over ensuing decades. In 1906, the town charter was amended to provide for voter registration and primary elections; these early changes helped spur development along Main Street which still functions today as an important shopping corridor for locals and visitors alike. On January 1, 1911, Kannapolis incorporated as a city under federal jurisdiction following passage of acts 15 and 16 of the National Act for Cities (15 U.S., 3d ed.) This move signaled growing interest within local government in issues important to citizens such as education, economic development and public health care – areas that would come to dominate municipal life over time. On December 6th 1916 Mayor James Hance consecrated our new City Hall following an inspection by Lieutenant Colonel Preston Blair which found that "the present structure does not meet all requirements prescribed by law." A year later on January 2nd 1917 City Council passed an ordinance setting forth limits on hours of operation for businesses within the city limits with specific attention given to banks and other commercial interests that had been complained about since its inception days earlier! Today many streets leading into or out of downtown are still named after those who fought during World War I: First Sergeant Edward Jethro Pemberton (now Home Parade Boulevard), Private First Class William Gwynedd Vaughan (now Patton Avenue), Second Lieutenant Franklin Lamar Hawkins (now Main Street).
