The Naval Air Station Kannapolis is one of the oldest naval air stations in the United States. Kannapolis is an agricultural town located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The population was 12,083 at the 2010 census, up from 11,722 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point Micropolitan Statistical Area. Kannapolis is bordered by Randolph to the east, Union County to the west and Gaston County to the north. The town was founded in 1834 by Captain John Aiken as a small settlement on Catawba Creek near present-day downtown Kannapolis. The first post office was established in 1835 and name changed to Kannapolis in 1839 after General Nathanael Greene's military victory over British forces at Battle of Kettle Bridge. In 1850, a sawmill and gristmill were built along with a store and blacksmith shop soon afterward. By 1860, there were 10 businesses in operation with a total population of about 350 people. Manufacturing became an important economic force during this time with soap production being one of early enterprises conducted by local entrepreneurs such as Prentice Mifflin and others who later founded basketball powerhouse Duke University and other major American companies such as PepsiCo Incorporated (PEP) then known as Pepsi-Cola USA Inc., which originated here in what is now Durham County before moving its operations overseas in 1968; Procter & Gamble Company; Wacoal/Brassey’s Furniture; Sears Roebuck & Co.; Jardine Matheson Paper Company;; United States Rubber Company;; Coca Cola Refreshment Corporation). During World War II, numerous plants were developed here including Ford Motors' Plant 428 for assembly line work on B-24 Liberator bombers that flew strategic bombing missions over Europe; Bethlehem Steel's Hormel Foods Division's Factory No 1 for processing food for troops stationed abroad on Okinawa; Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's Plant 227 for manufacture of tires for military use across various fronts including Operation Market Time when more than 400 million miles were put on new rubber products duringWWII also GAF Ammunition works which produced high quality rounds used by both USAAF pilots flying combat missions over Japan during WWII as well as allies like RAF Bomber Command using their factories located around Germany while munitions manufacturing shifted fromWest Germany to EastGermany due to Allied efforts directed against Hitler following his rise to power following WWI
