Kernersville is a small town in Rockingham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,905 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kernersville is named after Captain John C. Kerner who fought in the American Revolution and later served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. The town was founded by Captain John C. Kerner and his wife Hannah on July 12, 1828, just south of what is now downtown Kernersville. In 1833, Captain Kerner donated land for a courthouse and schoolhouse; these structures remain today as parts of the Town Hall complex. The first store in town was built by Wm Hogg on South Church Street in 1830. In 1838, Colonel James Letcher moved his family from Fulton to start a new life in what would become Kernersville. He had been impressed by Captain John C.'s abilities as a soldier and farmer and decided to make himself useful to his new community when he donated land força schoolhouse and courthouse on Anderson Avenue near what is now Seventh Street. Mrs Letcher also contributed with some buildable property north of her home on McCormick Road which still stands today within sight of her former home (now used as residential units). When America declared war against Great Britain in 1861,Captain John C., along with many other brave Americans including Mayor George Whitefield II organized resistance movements against British rule throughout their region including serving time in jail or prison for their actions! Captain John's grandson Elijah Dillard also took an active role during this time period serving twice as mayor of Henderson County before dying young at age 31 years old while fighting valiantly alongside our troops during World War I! Today we proudly honor both captains with erecting two large bronze tablets at each corner of Main Street plaza commemorating their service!
