Kernersville is a town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. Kernersville is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the home of UNC-Chapel Hill and PNC Park. The first settlers in what would become Kernersville were prospectors who discovered coal and other minerals on July 5, 1838 during an expedition led by Captain John Sledge from Durham. In 1839, George Waddell founded Waddell and Company which mined coal until 1861 when it discontinued operations because of strikes by union miners. In 1845 James Beddoe established Hendrix & Beddoe Manufacturing Company to produce cotton goods including shoes, hats, gloves and saddles for horseback riders. The company became one of the largest textile companies in America before its bankruptcy in 1865. In 1881 JB Donelson erected a frame factory on the original site of Waddell & Beddoe to produce cowboy costumes for American West movies such as "Agua Caliente", "The Return Of Wyatt Earp" and "Cowboy Bebop". Donelson's factory continued production until 1984 when it closed due to market saturation. In 1905 James Huggins organized a group of farmers into what would become the Farmers' Union (FU). The FU went on to campaign for statehood for North Carolina in 1912 and won that vote but lost representation in Congress later that year after becoming embroiled in a bitter political struggle with southern Democrats over farm policy reform legislation known as New Deal agricultural reforms or relief programs. In 1916 Elisha Cuthbert established Cuthbert et al Paper Merchants Association Limited which operated paper mills until 1951 when it merged with Southern Paper Corporation to form Southwestern Paper Corporation which continued operations until 1992 when it merged with Allied Can Incorporated to become Allied Can/Northwest Paperweighted Industries Inc., also known as Northwest Paper Products Co., Inc., since 1995.) At its peak Nordstroms department store employed 1,200 people while Post Office service had employees servicing 2,000 addresses serving 865 customers daily from five Locations across Kernersville by 1951). After years of decline following World War II both Nordstroms and Post Office services were privatized within Northwest Paper Products Co.,Inc.. In 1987 NWP purchased Florimo’s grocery chain operating three stores located throughout southeastern North Carolina selling items such as beer, soft drinks, chips n’ salsa etc.. Florimo’s closure left behind a vacuum at local markets where NWP was able purchase competing interests including King Soopers Markets Ltd.; Alexi’s Markets Ltd.; SCI Foods; Shoprite Supermarkets; Meijer Stores Inc.; Kroger Companies) followed by making attempts unsuccessfully to purchase Dillons Grocery Stores LLC which failed due largely to competition from Walmart US Corps.). By 2002 all but one Southwest Division store had been closed leaving only two locations open - one near Charlotte airport serving passengers arriving through Terminal 4 while the other served as an occupied retail space used by several small businesses providing services such as taxidermy etc.. With limited resourcesNWP filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on October 15th 2002 entering into administration soon afterwards . On May 12th 2003 assets were sold off resulting in $2 million payment made unto creditors totalling $25 million . On November 17th 2003 NorthwestPaperProductscoincorporationwas dissolved resulting in assets being divided among individual owners with majority passing onto Kroger Companies Holdings LLC worth an estimated $48 million)

The area that is now Kernersville was first settled by German immigrants in 1799. In 1868, the town of Kernersville was incorporated as a village. The population reached 4,000 by 1922 and 10,000 by 1930. In 1941, during World War II, the town became an important suburb of Raleigh because of its large munitions production plants. After the war, the economy shifted to services and highway construction. The population peaked at 14,000 in 2000 but declined to 11,500 by 2010.
