The community is located on the southern bank of the Yadkin River and was founded by German immigrants in 1851. Kernersville has a history that includes being one of the first American towns to be established in what is now known as the Smoky Mountains National Park. In addition to its natural attractions and history, Kernersville also has a strong economy based on agriculture and commerce. Today, Kernersville remains an important center for culture and education in the region. The town was founded on 4 July 1851 by German immigrants named Caspar Kerner and his wife Anna Schaefer. At that time, there were only a few hundred Germans living in North Carolina and little chance that they would settle permanently within any particular community or township; thus, it was not unusual for new arrivals to seek out opportunities within their own hometowns before establishing themselves elsewhere. Prior to 1861, when North Carolina became part of the United States of America, most Germans living in America came from Germany's Rhineland region – which included what is now western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. Consequently, many members of the original Kerner family had grown up inside Ofenheim am Rhein (Otto's Valley), Pennsylvania (now Allentown). After spending several years working as farmhands around Strasburg (now Altoona), Pennsylvania (then Reading), Caspar Kerner decided to move his family westward into what is now Buncombe County so that he could join his brother Johann Friedrich at this new site. Kernersville served as both a stop along the way for travelers heading northwestward through Cherokee Lake District country towards Asheville or East Tennessee Territory; as well as an important commercial center due to its location across from Whatcom Creek where goods such as flour and cheese could be easily transported overland from Franconia Township while still being able to sell products locally. As early as 1853-54 following passage through Thereby Creek Gorge on horseback by two brothers named George & John Hillyer – who were exploring land grants offered by Governor Swain pursuant to Cherokee Nation Treaty 5 – local businessmen began looking for ways to develop land east of Whatcom Creek Falls leading potentially down into those newly acquired lands south of Rutherfordtonborough Courthouse including present-day Englewood Cliffs National Wildlife Refuge.. A store opened in 1855 at Third Street corner High Street serving initially just general agricultural needs such as provisions for farmers traveling north via Three Forks Road before becoming more fully dedicated later that year to exporting manufactured goods carrying names like “Goudreau’s Provision Store” until moving uptown into current day Renfro Hall with adjoining building currently used mostly offices by DuBois School District staff/students during school days months interrupting regular pedestrian access providing much needed staging area adjacent courthouse square during courthouse functions etc… . . . By 1861 most all business activity had relocated away from river crossing point making main street Main Street thru today renamed 3rd Street dead end diverging here again joining other streets name changed since then…. thereby creating present day city limits….. permanent features associated with settlement date back 1st July 1851 when Kaspar Kerner arrived with wife Anna Schaefer
