Kinston is a town in North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,463 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kinston–Lenoir City, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first recorded human settlement in what is now Kinston was by the Cherokee in 1795. In 1819 gold was found near present day Kinston and development began immediately. The first post office was established in 1826 and the first store was built on current day Eastern Avenue in 1830. The townsite name comes from Englishman John Knox who visited the area during a military campaign against Native Americans in 1809-10. Knox named the creek "Kintail" after his visit to the area, which means "humble place". In 1886, a railroad depot was built along Eastern Avenue and by 1889 it had become an important transportation link for goods between eastern North Carolina and central Tennessee. By 1900 there were over 100 businesses operating in downtown Kinston with a population of 2,500 people! During World War II (1939-1945), manyKinston residents took service in the U.S Army or Navy through various selections available through enlistment agencies such as Selective Service System (SSS). During that time much of what stands today around downtown Kinston were constructed: First Baptist Church (now called Cathedral Basilica), Interstate 95 exit 7A (now Eastern Avenue), East High School Gymnasium, and most notably Fort Bragg Memorial Park across from I-95 east of town limits - all serving as wartime military bases providing vital logistical support to Allied forces fighting on two fronts at home and abroad!
