The navy has a long and proud history in Kinston, North Carolina. The Sailors' Museum of the United States Navy is one of the most comprehensive naval museums in the country. It features maritime art, artifacts from various warships, and more. The museum is open to the public every day from 9am to 4pm. In 1892, US Naval Officer James Biddle donated land near downtown Kinston for a new naval base. In 1912, Admiral John McCain's yacht was sunk off of Kinston beach by Spanish submarines while on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. The yachts were salvaged and restoration began almost immediately. Admiral McCain's yacht became known as USS "Majestic" (N-9) in honor of his visit. Majestic also served as the first USS Constitution (N- Signature) in 1919 at Jacksonville, Florida during World War I before being decommissioned in 1922 and sold for scrap metal back to the navy. In 1946, USS "Hercules" (AGS-5), an all steel hulled supertanker with a displacement of 1,500 tons was launched into service by PFS Marine Services Inc., Mechanicsburg Township, Pennsylvania as HMS Hestia (FV 4492). She spent over twenty years afloat transporting coal and oil products between ports along the East Coast before being retired in 1984 after serving as part of Philadelphia Fleet Week crowd control vessel detachment stationed at Kingsport Harbor Marina RV Park Gulf Breeze FL until her retirement.. Kinston is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Yadkin River. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 51,594. The name "Kinston" was derived from the Cherokee word kin-dah (a Tsuhaku people phrase meaning "place where everything is good") and then angled to steen-drawek (a place with many cotton plantations) which became Kinston after 16 October 1792 when Captain John Smith discovered this site during his Expedition along the Hiwassee River. In 1828, Kinston was made an incorporated town and named for General James Longstreet of Virginia who had fought in the Mexican-American War as a colonel and general under General Winfield Scott. The first post office in Kinston opened on 1 May 1827. The present courthouse was built in 1868 and includes a large marble fireplace typical of antebellum homes in that era. The land for what is now downtown Kinston was given to George Waddell by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1696 as part of his purchase of much of what is now NC 119 south from Roanoke Island for £4 per acre ($8 per km2). On 8 July 1860, $5 worth of gold coins were found near downtown Kinston under heavy excavation by engineering students at UNC Chapel Hill while prospecting for coal seams nearby on Dickenson's Coal Mine property owned by Cornelius Vanderbilt II; this discovery led to mayor Aiken’s decision to rename downtown after explorer David Livingstone who visited NC 119 area on 23 August 1860 while exploring veins of coal northwest of Roanoke Island just prior to his shipwreck off African coast on 28 August 1860 killing all but one crew member HMS Beagle while sailing into open sea off Cape Lookout In 1865 Alfred Wegener developed geology studies at UNC Chapel Hill which resulted in him developing his theory about continental drift that would eventually lead to World War I After years planning by various civic groups including economic development group known as "The Business Men's League", white businessmen donated $1 million towards construction resulting in First Presbyterian Church building completed first phase between 1928 - 1930 followed by two more phases between 1946 - 1948 and 1959 - 1961 with additions such as a gymnasium/pool hall/theater complex also completed In 1957 local developer Donnie Sheppard donated over 2 acres (0.81 km2) situat

The first recorded European exploration of what is now Kinston took place on December 6, 1775, when Lieutenant Colonel James Johnston and Company A of the Continental Army landed here after successful efforts to outpost Charlotte on May 5th. He named his new settlement for George Washington, Revolutionary War General and First Lady of America (1789-97). In 1819, John Fayette organized a group of fifty pioneers who built Fort Buncombe near present-day Kinston on Buncombe Creek as part of an attempt to establish trade with Cherokee Indians living in that area. The fort served as a trading post until it was destroyed by Indian raiders in 1827. In 1828, Robert Epps purchased land here from Native American leaders for $10 per acre and began developing this country into one of the most plantations in North Carolina. In 1840 he founded Epps & Co., one of the largest cotton merchants in America at that time.
