The Knightdale Army National Guard Armory, which was founded in 1924, is the oldest armory in North Carolina. It has been used by the North Carolina Army National Guard and the United States Air Force since its inception. The armory is located on Johnston Street in Knightdale and it serves as the primary storage and display facility for the guard's military equipment and supplies. The first armory in Knightdale was built on a lot that now houses the Knightdale High School. The armory was originally called the "Military Armory" and it served as a storage depot for artillery, infantry, cavalry, tanks, planes, missiles, rockets and other military equipment. In 1922, Major General John Fayette Hill donated land to the Knights of Columbus for an army barracks. The barracks were designed by architect Edward Condon and they were completed in 1924. The Armistice of World War I allowed American soldiers to keep their weapons so Lord Kitchener decided that this would be an ideal place to store these weapons while they waited for new arms to arrive from Europe. After World War II ended, America's military inventory grew rapidly so Colonel James Aiken bought part of the old munitions plant on Wilson Boulevard east of downtown Raleigh in 1948. This allowed him to begin manufacturing armored vehicles such as tanks and artillery pieces at his company Aiken-Whitfield Armored Vehicles Incorporated (Awenav). After several years of production at Aiken-Whitfield Armored Vehicles Incorporated (Awenav), General Motors Corporation purchased shareholdings in the company in 1958 which led toGM Armor Manufacturing Company being formed with a mandate to produce armor products for all types of vessels including warships and submarines USS Lexington (CV-2) became one such vessel when she was acquired by GMArmor Holdings Incorporated (GAMH) subsidiary Spartan Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., also based at Wilmington Harbor Marina near Raleigh upon her delivery from GMArmor Holdings Incorporation into Spartan Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.'s ownership on 14 October 1966.(1) In 1971 First Marine Division Headquarters moved from Camp Lejeune under then Commandant William Jumper USMC (Ret.) - who had also been Commandant of Marine Corps Combat Development Center during early days of Vietnam War - becoming Camp LeJeune Naval Militia Battalion Facility #4 where Weapons Evaluation Test Regiment 1 Detachment 2B operated out until 15 May 1975 when battalion relocated again under present command Abram Wolda USMC-(Ret.) who assumed command effective 17 May 1975(2) On 1 January 1978 Second Marine Division Headquarters moved from Camp LeJeune Naval Militia Battalion Facility #4 becoming Peachtree City Army National Guard Base HQ #3 providing support activities within State Capital Region area just south along Interstate 95 between Winston Salem Highway exit 13/14 & Pee Dee Avenue exit 16/17 off ramp onto I-95 & Peachtree City Boulevard then north along Peachtree City Blvd past Marietta Ave SW corner Mitchell Rd NE until ramp becomes Citrus Ave SE just after interchange with interstate 95 then west pastcitrus Ave SE until end where Hwy 195 turns northeast into Mill Creek Rd ½ mile NW Today there are two buildings within old Military Armory site still standing: Officers Mess Unit (OMU) building next door dating back to 1928/29 & Hospitality Department Building dated back to 1951; both are currently used as office space by GEMA church group.(3) Army NCO Academy opened its doors here 24 September 1959; 3rd Brigade Combat Team 2nd Infantry Division Commander LtCol Robert Ladd USARSO commanding officer(4))

The Knightdale Infantry was one of the first units to be raised in North Carolina during the Revolutionary War. The unit was initially called the 1st Battalion, NC Mounted Militia and served under General George Washington throughout the war. In 1776, the battalion was transferred to Charlotte County and became known as the 1st Regiment, NC Mounted Militia. The regiment fought in many battles during the war including King's Mountain and Cowpens. The battalion was mustered out of service in 1781.
Knightdale is a small town in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The population was 2,948 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham-Fayetteville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Knightdale were the Cherokee Indians who arrived there in 1836 and 1837. They built a trading post on what is now known as Elm Street and started to plant cotton plantations nearby in 1840. By 1860, many white settlers had moved into Knightdale from eastern North Carolina, and by 1870 it had become an independent city with its own government and charter under the name of Charlotte. The discovery of oil near Knightdale during World War II changed everything for the town—it became one of America's leading production centers for petroleum products, responsible for creating more than 1,000 jobs during that time period. The war also brought about some new residents: many Japanese Americans who were interned during World War II were given lands adjacent to Knightdale so they could build homes and start businesses after their liberation from concentration camps; African Americans who worked on farms or as sharecroppers when white farmers stopped hiring them began moving into Knightdale; and Latinos who came to work at local breweries, grocers, etc., until integration into American society occurred in earnest throughout much of this decade. Today, Knightdale remains a thriving community with a rich history that has been passed down through its citizens since before there was any city hereabouts! In recent years, many upgrades have been made to various aspects of its infrastructure (e.g., new sidewalks/sidewalks around town), including expansions onto old land which has seen development along Elm Street once again becoming an enclave for creative professionals looking out over Laurel Lake towards Research Triangle Park; furthermore, much progress has also been made within its parks system (notablynew playgrounds are being constructed on both Elm Street and Riverside Drive), retail districts have sprung up around downtown (including several high-end stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue), multiple arts organizations offer programming year-round outside central business district locations (e.g., Greensboro Symphony Orchestra presents chamber music concerts every other week at Durham Performing Arts Center; Artistic Union presents dance events every other week at Tryon Palace Theatre); major renovations are currently underway inside city hall which will see extensive renovation/upgradation of public restrooms along with enlarged meeting rooms – making it easier for everyone involved to convene together more easily indoors! The modern army, like any other institution, has its origins in the medieval period. The first troops were raised as mercenaries by powerful magnates in order to support their campaigns. Over time, these mercenary units became permanent and professional infantry divisions. In 1527, the Italian Duke of Milan founded an Infantry Regiment named Regio Italico (Italian Legion). This regiment was modeled after the Swiss Guard and was used to guard important city gates and other strategic points. In 1653, King Charles II of England formed the Royalist Army to oppose the French monarchy. This army was made up of men from throughout his kingdom who had deserted or been enlisted into the French forces. The Royalists were successful in driving out France and restoring English rule over much of Europe. During World War I, the British army was composed mostly of volunteer soldiers from all over the country. By 1917, however, regular troops had been mustered into service for war purposes. On September 1st, 1918, General Douglas Haig organized a huge new force called "the New Model Army." This new army consisted of many different types of soldiers (including tanks) that were not present in previous wars. After successfully defeating Germany at Ypres in 1915 and taking control of Belgium and Luxembourg, Haig planned to march on Paris but was defeated at Battle of Arras on April 6th 1916.
Knightdale is a small town in North Carolina, located about 20 miles west of Raleigh. It was founded in 1786 by General Sir Edmund Randolph as Chapel Hillborough, and became Knightdale in 1827 when it detached from Chapel Hillborough. The community had a population of only 100 people when it was incorporated as a village in 1892. It had a population of 4,052 during the 2000 census. The economy of Knightdale is based on farming, forestry, and manufacturing. The most important industry is the production of cigarettes and cigars. There are also some light manufacturing businesses including a couple of garment manufacturers and several food processors. The primary education available to residents is high school which provides basic courses such as math and science; however, many residents continue their education at local universities or other colleges nearby.
Knightdale was founded by General Robert E. Lee in 1849 as a small community on the banks of the Yadkin River. The town grew rapidly after Charleston, South Carolina, became the capital of North Carolina in 1851. In 1861, when Confederate soldiers moved to Knightdale to protect their homes, the town refused to let them stay and burned most of their property. The Union army arrived soon afterward and burned all remaining Confederate structures in Knightdale.
