Knightdale is a small town in Gastonia, North Carolina. It was founded in 1875 by John Knight and his wife Susannah. The population was 2,500 at the 2010 census. The town is located on the Yadkin River, about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Gastonia and 50 miles (80 km) northwest of Charlotte. It consists of a small downtown core with several buildings from the 1800s, as well as smaller older settlements to the east and west. Knightdale's ZIP code is 27704. The Knights were early settlers in this area and founded what would become Knightdale on land that they had purchased from Catawba Chief James Davidson for $4 per acre in 1875. When Davidson died in 1877, his son Robert took over guardianship of the property and it passed through various hands until it was purchased by Fayetteville businessman Wm. Hargrave Beal in 1907 for $25 per acre - making Knightdale one of the largest freehold plantations within reach of Fayetteville proper. Beal subdivided the land into homestead lots and began each new farm with an experimental crop rotation - growing corn then switching to soybeans or cotton when those crops failed; doing this so that he could test new methods and varieties before larger investments were made on bigger farms nearby. This experimentation paid off; Beal’s farm became one of North Carolina’s leading production growers during World War II due to its efficient use of irrigation systemspletching water onto hillsides from giant steel drums to fertilize plants under high pressure while using very little sunlight – allowing these crops to grow even during long periods of drought or severe frost). Knightdale is a town in Henderson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Henderson County by population and the second-largest industrial center in the state after Durham. Knightdale is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by brothers John and Nathaniel Knight in 1819 as a small farming community near present-day Durham on Catawba Creek. The two original settlers were descendants of white British colonists who had come to North Carolina in 1781 as surveyors for King George III. They named their new settlement for Sir Charles Napier, 1st Baronet (1685-1757), an English general who had fought against Spanish forces in South America during the War of Jenkins' Ear (1704-06). In 1837, Sir Charles Napier's grandson, Charles Napier II (1802-1868), donated 5 acres (20 hectares) of land to the town to be used as a park and agricultural fairgrounds; this donation remains one of Knightdale's most important assets today. The park became known as "Sir Charles Park". In 1865, when Henderson County was divided into two parts, Knightdale merged with one part of Durham to form what is now Durham city limits. In 1876, when Duke University moved from Chapel Hill to Raleigh and Henderson Counties were split again, Knightdale joined Durham proper within Raleigh City Limits until it seceded from Raleigh City Limits in 1907 due to lack of support from Mayor James Blythe effectivewy due to its location on the edge of downtown Raleigh. Knightdale remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it became a part of Henderson County under bill 910 signed by Governor Briscoe which created both townships within Henderson County between them; however local governments continued operating separately until 1991 when they were consolidated into one unified municipality called "Hendersonville" under bill 805 signed by Governor Beasley which abolished all local government functions within Henderson County except for fire rescue/EMS service and zoning laws governing land use etc.; however all school district functions remain separate herein including educationally related matters like building permits and property taxes while county government services such as sheriff/fire Marshal service are provided by "Hendersonville Township Government."
