The Daniel family created a grocery store and rifle shop on what is now the corner of High Street and Elmira Avenue. By 1853, they had five children and two wives: Sarah (born about 1819) and Anna (born about 1824). In 1865, John S. Daniel’s son-in-law Abram Burchill bought the store from the Daniel family for $5 cash. Abram ran the business until 1898 when it was sold to Morris Ladd. Ladd was born in Scotland in 1800 and came to America in 1851 with his parents. He began working at various businesses before opening his own mercantile store on Exchange Place near where Laurinburg now stands in 1897. From 1907 to 1913, he was president of the North Carolina Bankers Association which helped promote banking interests throughout the state. During World War I, Ladd served as treasurer of Allied forces munitions factories located in Laurinburg; he also managed a munitions company that manufactured grenades for use by troops during World War I. After World War I ended, Ladd retired from business operations but continued to support local charities until his death in 1951 at age 87 years old. In 1927, Laurinburg native Edwin Covington began selling firearms at nearby Gander Mountain; this became an effective marketing tool for Covington because gun stores refused to carry weapons that were not licensed by him or his organization, The Gun Collector’s Society of America (GCSA). Laurinburg is a town in Harnett County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,421 at the 2010 census. Laurinburg is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1834 by Scots-Irish immigrants from County Cavan and was named for General Andrew Jackson's father, Captain John Laurin. Laurinburg became a railroad town in 1907 and began to grow rapidly after the opening of the Appalachian Mountains Railway (AMR) in 1911. In 1930, Laurinburg annexed adjoining towns of Fayetteville and Randolph to form a new city which had a population of 11,000 people. After World War II ended, Laurinburg experienced rapid growth as truckers and other workers relocated to the area for new jobs in manufacturing and construction. Laurinburg is one of the oldest places in Gaston County and has been inhabited by Cherokee Indians since the late 17th century. In 1868, Captain John C. Bostic founded what would later become known as Bostic Furniture Company in Laurinburg. This company manufactured furniture for wealthy Americans throughout the south and into Canada. Laurinburg's economy changed with World War II when the war created new demand for military hardware and supplies in the area. Laurinburg also became an important manufacturing center during this time because of its access to coal resources and its location near two major railroads. The town experienced significant growth after World War II until the early 1990s when it began to lose its economic importance due to technological advancements and changes within Gaston County. By 2000, Laurinburg had lost over half of its population to suburbanization and other forms of urban development. In 1885, the Laurinburg Railroad was chartered. The railroad reached Laurinburg in 1892 and connected with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Railroad at Spruce Bluff. In 1896, Laurinburg became a city and the original tracks were abandoned.
