Laurinburg is a town in Vance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Laurinburg is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Laurinburg" derives from two Cherokee words meaning "the meadow where the sweet potatoes grow." The first settler in what is now Laurinburg was John Whitehead, who purchased land in 1788. By 1814 there were over fifty settlers living in what is now Laurinburg Township and one hundred and thirty-five residents in Addison Township. In 1827, the town was named for General James A. Hill when he became military governor of Vance County after his appointment as sixth president of the United States by Andrew Johnson. On December 7, 1861, during Confederate Governor Robert Easley's Raid on Vance County, Union troops burned most of Addison Township before destroying all buildings within five miles of Davidson county line with orders to do so if any civilians were found inside or outside the burning township boundaries. This raid marked one of several occasions when Union men burned civilian dwellings throughout eastern North Carolina during the Civil War because they believed that these homes harbored Confederate sympathizers orprovided cover for Confederate guerrillas active within their borders. In 1865 when General William Tatum took command of Confederate forces in Vance County after Johnson's death, he ordered all houses belonging to soldiers or civilians located west of Yadkin River to be destroyed as well as barns and other buildings along that river banks due to their potential use as headquarters by Confederate forces operating east of that river junction (Doris Hargrave reports that this order specifically targeting residences near present-day Laurinberg occurred on February 15)).
