Laurinburg is located on U.S. Route 12 south of Durham and north of Cary. The first settler in Laurinburg was John Hill who built a cabin in 1819. A post office was established here in 1824, and by 1830 the population had reached 100 people. In 1838 the town site was bought from Jno Wilkinson by Wm Silliman and James Tryon for $2,500 cash and 10 slaves. The Tryon family would control Laurinburg until 1865 when they sold it to Julius Hoke for $10,000 cash and 75 slaves In 1865 Julius Hoke sold Laurinburg to Gorman Mabry for $10,000 cash and 150 slaves In 1895 Prentice Gorman donated land to form what is now downtown Laurinberg Municipal services were first provided by volunteer fire companies with three engines each starting in 1903 In 1907 a water tower was erected which still stands today In 1912 a high school (now known as Appalachian School) opened its doors And finally in 1925 the US Post Office moved from Deep Creek into downtown Laurinberg . With this move consistency began within the community with mail delivered through two building on Main Street between 1907-1920; one serving as an office & one housing library
