The United States Air Force is one of the most powerful militaries in the world and its aircraft are some of the most advanced in the world. Lewisville is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lewisville is the only incorporated community in Gaston County and it has its own police department, fire department, two schools (one public and one private), a post office (the Lewisville ZIP Code 92534), an agricultural center (the Lewisville Variety Store), and a few businesses including a grocery store and several banks. The first permanent settler in what is now Lewisville was George Hines who built his cabin on the side of hill above present day intersection of US Highway 421 and Old US 1 in 1828. In 1839 he married Emily Fenton and they started to farm around their cabin until they acquired land for plantations near Columbia, SC in 1840. They named their plantation "Fayette" after General James Ewell who had fought against Confederate forces at battles such as Chancellorsville and Monmouth while serving with the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1865 when America achieved her independence from Great Britain, Fayette's slaves were freed by Union general Ulysses S Grant following his victory at Appomattox Court House over Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army. In 1872 when Fayette became known as "The Hill Country", it was due to its location between two major railroad lines that ran through Gaston County – one running north to Charlotte via Rocky Mount Road and another running south via Kinston Avenue to Greeneville which connected with Richmond Street near downtown Raleigh across City Creek before terminating at Durham Street just east of Hillsborough Mall in Durham city limits. This created some of the most prestigious real estate values within Gaston County due to this isolated geography which allowed farmers to sell property which otherwise would have been uneconomically viable without high traffic rates or other potential buyers forced thereto by either economic necessity or development interests outside of town boundaries). By 1890, Lewisville had become one of North Carolina's leading cities. The city experienced significant growth during World War II; during that time, it became one of America's most heavily bombed cities!
