The Lewisville Schools District was created from a merger of two other Gaston County school districts on December 3, 1991. In 1925, General Motors announced plans to build a $225 million car plant in Gastonia and surrounding areas. The original plan called for the towns of Lewisville and Boonesborough to be merged into one municipality; however this did not happen because Boonesborough felt it would lose its individuality and location while Lewisville wanted more public services available to its citizens than those provided by the Gastonia School District. Because of this discrepancy in desires, the two municipalities struggled to merge until they finally accomplished it on July 1st 1975 due to lack of agreement between both factions about what would become their new form of government (the first municipal merger in Gastonia History). With that merger came responsibility for all public education within the newly merged municipality as well as annexation of neighboring townships which had been inactive since their incorporation into gastonia county including: Dawson Creek, Holly Springs, Crawford Valley (now parts of Rocky Mount), Bloomsburg and much later Surry Hills - makingLewisville officially an independent city with its own police department and fire station! Although many residents still refer to themselves as "city folk", annexation has made Lewisville home to some top business industries such as Home Depot which opened its first store in Boonesborough in 1984 and American Honda which moved its manufacturing operations from Charlotte to Lewisvill
