The Lexington Naval Shipyard was founded in 1852 as the first naval shipyard in the United States. The yard functioned until 1861, when it became part of the Confederate navy. The shipbuilding program at the yard began in 1855 and continued until 1865. During this time, the Yard produced over 100 warships, including CSS Sumter, CSS Pickering, USS Constitution, USS Hatteras and USS Yorktown.
