The United States Air Force has a rich history in Lincolnton, North Carolina. The USAF was founded on December 10th, 1947 when the United States Congress passed the National Security Act of 1947. This act included the creation of the United States Air Force and authorized President Franklin D. Roosevelt to create a strategic air force for American defense. The USAF was originally called HqSgt Corps and activated on February 16th, 1948 with one squadron consisting of F-4 Phantom II fighter planes stationed at Robins AFB, Georgia. The USAF later moved its headquarters from Washington D.C to Lincolnton in 1949 after being transferred from Army Air Forces command. On July 1st, 1951 the USAF became operational with Boeing B-47 Stratojet bombers when it was redesignated as the USAAF/USAF Bombardment Command (USBC). Inactivated on November 15th, 1954 when Headquarters were reassigned back to Military Aeronautics Command under Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld in order to combine all bomber commands into one organization known as Bomber Command which would facilitate better planning and execution of air campaigns during the Korean War. On October 17th, 1960 First Lieutenant Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin became the first human being to walk on an extraterrestrial surface when he stepped onto an antenna platform at Kennedy Space Center in Florida while conducting a mission for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Immediately following his landing Buzz Aldrin began Operation Eagle Claw which was designed to test technology needed for space exploration by launching two American astronauts into orbit around Earth in May 1961 aboard Apollo 11; however thisfailedto achieve any launch objectives due to problems with both airplanes and ground support systems. This failure led directly to America's involvement in space exploration through Project Gemini where two American astronauts - Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins - became first humans everborn upon landing at Pad 39A on July 20th,. 1969; however theirflight failed due to engine troubles just prior theretoLanding instead at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station where they became aware that they had become part of an exclusive club which only consisted of men! The Lincolnton Air Force Base gift history begins in 1947 when the United States Air Force activated its first squadron of F-86 Sabres at Lincolnton AFB. The base was home to the 8th Fighter Squadron, which was equipped with Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter planes. In 1951, the USAF activated the 1st Tactical Missile Wing and moved its missile storage and installation to Lincolnton AFB. This strategic arms system allowed 1 AD to extend its reach into new geographic areas while also reinforcing US security interests in Central America, South Asia and Europe. By 1984, 2ND TDW had become operational as Task Force Thunderbolt and responsibility for operationally supporting all NATO Allied Commanders fell under 3rdAir Task Force Eagle which was headquartered at RAF Fairford in England). 3rd ATF Eagle eventually fall victim to budget cuts in 1992 leading to it becoming an operational cadre again with a headquarters at Davis-Monthan AFB Tucson AZ until it is disbanded by end of 1996 having flown over 11 million hours! Lincolnton AFB gift history continues throughout today with Installation No. 511 which houses two Joint Strike Fighters - F/A-18 Hornets - along with other associated gear including an AESA radar station housing two MQM6 Gray Foxes; four KC-135Rsrewired as tanker support Aircraft; five EHAs; three KC-130R Stratotankers; one AIM 12 Sidewinder Targeting System(TSS); six EA-8 Expeditionsary Multirole Aircraft(EMRA); one Boeing 727 passenger jetliner simulator room complete with digital cockpit; seven Hawk Warrior attack helicopters each armed with Hellfire missiles; ten Cessna 182 Skymasters each equipped with .50 caliber machine guns & laser pointers; twelve OHB models homespun war games scenarios complete with infantry units fighting on Iwo Jima or Okinawa during World War II were conducted annually during Octoberfest weekend here on base! Lincolnton is a town in Vance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,691 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Lincolnton College and the headquarters for Chatham County Schools. Lincolnton is one of two towns in Vance County (the other being Gastonia), and it lies on the Scioto River some north of the county seat of Winston-Salem. The Scioto forms part of the borders of both Vance and Chatham Counties. The first permanent settler in what would become Lincolnton was James Caldwell, who arrived about 1770. Caldwell started a tannery near present-day downtown Lincolnton and soon built a log cabin on what is now Old Mill Road. He appears to have been among the early settlers who worked out land grants from European landowners. In 1802 John Pritchard purchased from Caldwell an acreage along present-day New Hope Pike which he put to cultivation as farmland later known as Pritchard's Prairie Preserve Today's campus of Appalachian State University stands on this farmstead which once stretched down to Pittsboro and eastward to Charlotte. In 1811 Jno Cash settled in present day downtown Lincolnton, building a store and post office there that remain today as part of First National Bank Building (now RenaissanceBank). That same year also saw another early settler, John O'Brien, arrive with his family from Ireland; he erected a small adobe house on what is now High Street just south of Third Avenue NW. O'Brien became connected with local politics by serving as mayor from 1812 until his death in 1816; during his term various civic improvements were made including construction of courthouse square (now Court Square Park). Another Irishman named Denis Kearney came to America about this time and founded nearby Kearneytown on land grant given him by General Nathanael Greene during the War for Independence (1780–81). In 1820 George Stephenson located locomotive No 1 near modern day Downtown Lincolnton – still extant – while working for Northern Railroad developing new track elsewhere across CSX Railway lands eastward into Virginia; Stephenson's horse-drawn traction engine helped make possible development of mills at Elizabethtown downstream in Chatham County starting about this time too – these mills continuing operation until 1948 when they were replaced by aluminum smelters adjacent toElizabethtown creek watershed - thus ending any remaining historic interest or use associated with those facilities today! A few years later Andrew Jackson was elected President & served two terms before leaving office & becoming Vice President under Stephen Douglas prior to Ulysses S Grant succeeding him… This event helped lay foundation for much future economic development within Vance County brought about by railroads Generating jobs at Centerville location northeast downtown Winston Salem going allthe way back long before electricity began supplanting horses pulling wagons service there circa 1935 when electric streetlights began providing evening illumination throughout that area making it easier shopping areas then existing darkening hours hrs after dusk or morning light! Lincolnton is home to the Lincolnton-based Piedmont Regional Airport. The town was founded by white men in 1799 as a smallInto what is now Pickens County in 1821 when British settlers arrived on an expedition led by Colonel James Moore. They named the area "Lincolnton" after General Sir Francis Marion's ill-fated campaign against the Creek Indians some years earlier. In 1840, Abraham Lincoln visited Lincolnton while he was campaigning for election to the U.S. Senate from Illinois; he made a speech at Piedmont Hotel which survives as a local favorite memory. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded North Carolina and pillaged towns and villages near Charlotte; Lincolnton became one of his targets. Union troops destroyed all Confederate stores and buildings within sight of Lincolnton before withdrawing back across the nearby Cumberland River without attacking again. A year later General Jubal Early attacked South Carolina from within neighboring Johnston County; part of his army passed through central Pickens County on their way northward and burned most of what remained of Lincolnton during its brief occupation that summer night (July 15-16).
