After her husband’s death, Sarah LincolnJohnson started fundraising for a new military academy in North Carolina. Her efforts resulted in the creation of both the United States Military Academy at West Point and also the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. She also donated land to these schools. In 1892, she gave another donation to create an additional military academy – this time called Southern Army College – in Lexington County, South Carolina. Today Southern Army College is one of two universities that remain operational after being founded by Mrs. Abraham Lincoln Johnston (the other is Wake Forest University).

Lincolnton's first settlement was made on December 4, 1825, by Andrew Dixon and others who came from Lenoir County, Virginia. The town had its start as a small farming community with just 10 residents when it was named for Colonel John Lincolnton, an American Revolutionary War officer and delegate to the Continental Congress from North Carolina. A post office was established at Lincolnton in 1827 and remained in operation until 1903. In that year it was renamed for General Phillips Woodbury Butler by his widow, Martha Butler Heflin; General Butler had been killed during the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. Lincolnton is a small town located in McDowell County, North Carolina. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Lincolnton is one of the oldest towns in McDowell County, and it has been recorded as being founded on July 25, 1799. The first known settler in Lincolnton was James McMillan. He and his wife, Eliza Thomson-McMillan settled in what is now the southwest corner of Main Street and High Street in 1802. In 1815, John Hargrave built a log cabin on what are now Winton Road and Main Street. A post office called Lincolnton was established in 1820, and it remained operational until 1865. The town became an incorporated municipality on February 28, 1907. The community experienced some growth during World War II – its peak population was 2,515 residents late in 1945 – but subsequent declines have led to its current population size of 1,811. As with most areas of McDowell County during this time period, cotton farming played an important role in the local economy for many years; today there are few if any remaining farms within Lincolnton’s boundaries. Lincolnton remains a largely residential town; although there are some businesses open throughout the day (the only store is located down Middle Street), most activities take place inside the mainly single-family homes that dot its streetscape since they were built during the early 20th century when home ownership wasn’t common among McDowell County citizens.
