Lincolnton is a small town in North Carolina, United States. It is located on the border of Johnston and Cherokee counties and is part of the Greensboro–High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lincolnton is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 6,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham-Fayetteville metropolitan area. Lincolnton's name comes from its location on the Hiwassee River, which flows through the town. Lincolnton was founded by settlers in 1810 and named for Colonel John C. Lincolnton (1784-1840), an early settler who helped organize the Cherokee Nation. The first store in Lincolnton opened in 1811. By 1830, there were eight stores and fifty residents in Lincolnton. In 1834, a school was organized and named for Revolta Burt Lancaster (c1800-1884), an educator and anthropologist who served as superintendent of Indian Affairs under President Andrew Johnson from 1865 to 1868 and again from 1870 to 1875. In 1862, a post office was established at Lincolnton with Wm Jourdan as its first mail carrier. In 1863, Confederate General Robert Ewell's forces unsuccessfully besieged Fort Fisher within sight of Lincolnton while invading North Carolina; during this siege, many civilians were killed or injured by artillery fire from Fort Fisher. After the battle, Union General Jubal Early captured Fort Fisher and burned much of what remained of Durhamtown before withdrawing towards Raleigh.[1] A group of Confederate soldiers abandoned their supplies near Lincolton after they learned that Union troops had surrounded them; these men later formed the nucleus of what would become known as "The Lost Battalion".[2] In 1865–1866,[3] LINCOLTON lost its status as a village when it became one of twelve towns consolidated into Raleigh under New Town Law No. 527(A). At this time[4], most businesses closed because there was no market for goods brought into Raleigh by wagonloads from surrounding counties[5]. However, one store continued to operate until around 1870 due to its location along Third Street near Anson Mills Creek:[6][7][8] this store later became known as Sears & Roebuck Supermarket #1 due to its importance in local community life during that era[9][10]. In 1886,[11][12] local resident James Aiken donated land east of Third Street for use as an agricultural fairgrounds which today are home to Alamance Community College.[13][14]:113–115 Because Raleigh had not yet annexed Alamance County,[15]:116—the fairgrounds lay within city limits but without any taxation or rights thereto—LINCOLTON acquired some degree of independence throughout these years despite being effectively attached administratively to Raleigh proper only insofar as financial transactions concerned matters affecting both cities.[16]:111–114:122 Asaleighians typically gave more attention than people living outside Durham to events taking place within our townlimits; however such events did not always result in economic growth or social progress within our town itself.—Although some merchants disappeared completely during this time period because they could not compete with larger centralized markets elsewhere,—most small businessmen found ways around restrictions put upon them by central government officials,—including those placed upon retail trade activity within our jurisdictional boundaries.—Even though we experienced less growth culturally than other towns annexed into Raleigh during this time period,—we nevertheless experienced significant progress real estate-wise because development occurred adjacent to our rural/communal areas., Our downtown district gradually gentrified over time becoming increasingly residentialized
