In 1814, when Lincolnton was renamed for General Daniel Morgan—the first U S Army general captured during the War of 1812—local citizens decided that name should also serve as the town's official appellation. By this point, Lincolnton had grown quite large enough to warrant its own government: A Board of Trade was established in 1820 to manage trade with surrounding communities; a school was built in 1822; and a courthouse was erected in 1830. Lincolnton is a town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 10,681 at the 2010 census. Lincolnton is located on the Eastern edge of Rutherford County and is bordered by Charlotte to the east and uptown Raleigh to the west. The first settler in what would become Lincolnton was Andrew Wheeler who arrived in 1776. He named his land "Wheeler's Mills." In 1808, John Denton purchased some of Wheeler's land and developed it into a small community called Dentonville. A year later, General James Moore established military headquarters here and named this area Fort Moore after himself. The name change came about because Creek Indians were raiding eastern North Carolina from their base near present day Knoxville. General Moore wanted to deter these attacks so he ordered his troops to occupy Fort Moultrie on Johnston Island (now Savannah) for security purposes. In 1827, Colonel John Buford purchased some additional lands from Andrew Wheeler in what today is Lincolnton Township. At that time there were only two settlers living here: Captured Indian Chief William Worth and Revolutionary War veteran Jabez Catlett Jr.. Colonel Buford set up a log school house which served as an elementary school until 1846 when State House moved there from Raleigh due to construction projects downtown (the building still stands). This site became home also to courthouse (~1828), jail (~1850-57), post office (~1875-81), fire department (~1900-02), library (~1910-14) and more recently restaurants (Lincoln’s Inn ~2005). By 1860, over 50% of all the people living in Rutherford County lived in Lincolnton – mostly farmers who cultivated crops such as tobacco or rice; whitesmiths worked on railroads; blacksmiths built fences or repaired equipment for farms; doctors officed at local hospitals; milliners did sequencing work for cotton ginners; cooks prepared meals for residents during times of famine or war etc.; active businesses included saddlers, brewers & distillers, tanners & leather workers etc.. During Reconstruction period following Civil War ending federal rule over south Carolina through Emancipation Proclamation all freedmen must register with Freedmen’s Bureau if they had any property larger than one acre within five miles of any white person - this applied especially to slaves - so many free blacks left South Carolina for North Carolina during this time which increased tension between black Southerners & Unionists over rights/responsibility for former slaves now living within their own states! So much happened during these years that few things are remembered fully but many events have lasting effects includingCivil Rights Movement protests coming right around town while nearby Parkview plantation played hostess party (& Opposition) shortly before Montgomery Bus boycott begin 1/2 mile away###############################################################
