Lincolnton, North Carolina is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,502 at the 2010 census. Lincolnton is located on the east side of Gaston County and includes the villages of Allendale and Clarendon. The first European settlers in what is now Lincolnton were traders from Virginia who landed in 1675. In 1711, General James Moore settled here with his troops during the English Revolution. Lincolnton is a town in McDowell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 4,859 at the 2010 census. Lincolnton is part of the Asheville–Buncombe–Charlotte metropolitan area. Lincolnton was founded by General John Cushing on July 3, 1795 as a small station on the Watauga River between what are now Pisgah and Henderson counties. The first town meeting was held on October 6 of that year. On February 8, 1800, Lincolnton incorporated as a village with a government headed by a mayor and five selectmen. The first post office was established in Lincolnton on October 5, 1800. In 1824, Lincolnton became one of two towns within the new Davidson County when it was created from parts of McDowell and Buncombe counties. In 1839-1840, Colonel William Smedley built the first store in what is now Downtown Lincolnton after purchasing land from James Robertson for $2 per acre (equivalent to $ Today). In 1840-1841 J D Moore built another store which still stands today near First Baptist Church across from downtown square (now Bank Square). The town's growth continued through the years as more businesses were erected along Main Street including breweries (the first being "Moore's Brewery" located in what is now the old bank building), hotels and other commercial buildings until 1945 when World War II interrupted development; however some stores reopened during that time such as "The Gilded Age Store" which closed in 1951 but reopened again later that same year under new management as an antique mall/museum called "The Olde Hickory House". In 1949-1950 Clyde Withers purchased 2 acres west of downtown square for use as an experimental corn field known then as "Withers' Corn Field", later renamed "Broadwater Farms". This started up Main Street once again becoming vibrant with various businesses opening up along it including supermarkets such as Kroger before gradually winding down over time due to lack of interest or competition from newer shopping malls around town; however Broadwater Farms still remains open to this day used primarily for agricultural purposes despite its recent conversion into apartments and more recently also hosting golf tournaments among other events annually since its rebirth in 2014.
