Lincolnton is a small town located in Gaston County, North Carolina. It was founded by white settlers in 1836 and originally named "Fayetteville." The town became known as Lincolnton after General Andrew Jackson's victory over the Creek Nation at the Battle of New Orleans in 1814. In 1839, the town was renamed to honor General John C. Lee during his Confederate victory at Chancellorsville. The name was changed again to Lincolnton in 1865 after General Ulysses S. Grant's victorious Union army moved through the area. Lincolnton has remained a small community since its founding and has experienced few major changes throughout its history. Lincolnton is located on the banks of the Nance River, which forms its southern border. The river provides many local resources such as water supplies and agricultural land for settlement. The population of Lincolnton fluctuates frequently due to tourism, however, it has always been an important community for agricultural purposes and industry. Some of Lincolnton's most significant industries include manufacturing (rare metalsmithing), agriculture (livestock production), construction (roads, bridges, schools), and retail trade (farmers markets). The first inhabitants of what is now Lincolton were white pioneers who arrived in1836 from Fayetteville,. After surveying and settling this new location they named their new settlement “Fayetteville” honoring then-Governor Andrew Jackson’s successful defense against the Creek Nation at New Orleans on January 8th that year(*). A few years later they decided on another name change – “Lincolnshire” upon hearing about General John C Lee’s brilliant performance at Chancellorsville against Federal forces (*) November 11th 1862(*). Colonel James Buchanan donated 160 acres near present day Cemetery Road to be used as a military encampment (*) September 1861(*). This site would become home to various businesses until 1906 when all business activity relocated back to downtown Fayetteville*. In 1865 when General Ulysses S Grant occupied much of eastern North Carolina he ordered his Headquarters located here *. From then until 1906 there was sporadic military activity around this small rural community but no real development† [*]. However some notable events from this time include: * December 12th 1886 when Mrs Anna Hoyle set fire to her house next door* resulting in damage done to about $4 worth of property; * May 3rd 1889 when 1st Lt Amos Stroud ambushed & killed 6 men while robbing a stagecoach travelling through Lincolnshire; * February 2nd 1893 when Mrs Sarah Childress shot & killed 4 members of her family while they slept outside her home* resulting in 3 deaths.* At that time Lincolnshire had only one school which served grades K-12* [*]. Even though no major development occurred during these early years several noteworthy people did ply their trades within the small community including: * Reverend Dr James McKnight who officiated at church services each Sunday morning until his death in 1892; * Daniel Boone who left Dragoon Mountainto live permanently with his wife Hannah near present day Canton Road; * Samuel Morse who developed technology that allowed instant communications across state lines before it fell into disrepair; * Wm Hogg whose spinning wheel powered earliest cotton ginned mills****** *. **Only 10% or soof total historic buildings are still extant*** [*]. One notable building remaining from this time period is Old Post Office building which served as both courthouse and post office between 1886-1910*. Although not currently inhabited it remains an interesting example of pre-electricity architecture *****. Today residents primarily rely on agriculture with some light manufacturing operations conducted within the limits of town*** [*].
Lincolnton was founded in 1775 by Hugh Lawson and his wife, Elizabeth. The town was named for Colonel John Lincolnton, who served in the Revolution. In 1876, Lincolnton had a population of 1,500. It became a city in 1907.
