The name "Lumberton" derives from an Indian word meaning "to make or build." The town was founded in 1814 by Scots-Irish settlers and was named for Colonel John Lumber, who had bought land in what is now Craven County. In 1835, lumber merchants James W. Gentry and George Washington Smith started a sawmill on the Catawba River near present-day Lewisville. Other early mills included those built by Jethro Harper around 1840 and Isaac Pritchard around 1850; these were closed until the late 19th century when cotton production increased in eastern North Carolina and demand for wood increased as well. In 1860, Lumberton became one of the first counties to be divided into two parts whenCraven County was created from portions of Johnston and Tyrrell Counties; Lumberton remained within Craven County until 1923 when that county was dissolved as part of a larger reorganization of North Carolina state government which also included Edgecombe County and Wilkesboro County. Lumberton has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 350 years and began to be developed as a town in 1892. The first white settler arrived in 1894. In 1916, Lumberton became an incorporated municipality and saw a growth in business and commerce due to its location on the river. By 1970, lumber production had dwindled due to competition from cheaper prices from China and other countries. However, there have been recent efforts to revive the town's economy with investment in new businesses and development around its downtown area.
Lumberton was founded in 1795 by Captain John Brougham. It became a town in 1849 and it was named for Colonel James Lumber, who had purchased the land in 1795. The town was renamed Lumberton after General James Laughlin, the first U.S. military governor of North Carolina, in 1865.
