Lumberton is a town in Bladen County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,068 at the 2010 census. Lumberton is the smallest incorporated municipality in North Carolina and one of the most rural towns in the state. It lies on the Tyrrell–Wythe county line and stretches east to west for about 34 miles (55 km). Lumberton was founded by settlers who came from Tennessee in 1810. The first courthouse was built in 1812. In 1814, a post office called Greenville was established here and remained open until 1895. Lumberton became a city on February 22, 1906 when it incorporated as a result of an act of the General Assembly of North Carolina. Lumberton has many businesses that are important to its economy including two banks, three grocery stores, four restaurants and two medical clinics. The lumber business is still very important to the town with sawmills being one of its primarystay industries since before there were any transportation options available to carry logs long distances.
