The Matthews community is home to the Fifth Regiment of North Carolina Volunteer Infantry, a unit that has provided support to the military since 1795. The regiment was originally organized as part of the Continental Army and fought in many of the American Revolution and War for Independence. After the war, the regiment was disbanded but its members continued to serve in various civilian roles until 1861 when it became an infantry regiment again. The 5th Regiment served in various campaigns during the Civil War, most notably at battles such as Gettysburg and Chickamauga. After the war, it was disbanded again and its members joined other regiments in 1866. Today, there are still active members of this unit in Matthews who provide support to our local military installations.
Matthews, North Carolina is a town in McDowell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. Matthews is part of the Charlotte–Lenoir City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Matthews was John Hammond who arrival in 1784. Hammond built a small log cabin on an old farmstead and named it Hammond's Station. In 1827, Nathaniel Green moved to Matthews from Orange County and began trading with Native Americans along the Catawba River for goods including deer meat and bear skins. By 1830, Matthews had a post office and three churches: First Methodist (1830), Presbyterian (1832), and Baptist (1835). A school was started in 1836 by Elisha Payne but closed due to lack of students. In 1839, James Bogue founded Bogue & Bogue store which became one of the most prominent stores in Matthews before becoming a successful politician. In 1840, Nathaniel Green married Susanna Whittier and together they raised two children: John Green Jr., born in 1840,and Susanna Whittier Grant born in 1843; both served as members of the Anderson County Board of Education during their father's lifetime. On January 10th, 1861 – just over one year after Confederate forces sacked Fort Sumter – Matthews residents re-towned on their original land following Union military occupation that same year during the American Civil War Local resident Phebe Parks donated 840 acres of land to be used as farmland for Matthews citizens when first surveyed in 1865 by local surveyor William Hargrave The town site was formally platted on October 15th 1870 by Jesse Likens with plans to honor deceased founder Nathaniel Green The first buildings were erected soon thereafter with funding from Mrs Parks among others damage done by Union armies during early 1800s farming campaigns gave rise to name "Militia Hill" later changed to "Matthews"

Matthews was founded in 1792 by Captain John Matthews, a Revolutionary War veteran and naturalized United States citizen. The town was named for Colonel James Matthews, who fought at the Battle of Saratoga. The first store in the town opened on North Tryon Street in 1814. Matthews grew rapidly during the 1800s, thanks to its location near the intersection of two major routes linking Charlotte with Petersburg and Raleigh. In 1827, the town became a part of Henderson County when it was split off from Mecklenburg County. By 1840, Matthews had a population of 2,500 people and it boasted a library, theater, doctorate-granting university and several banks. However, by 1860 Matthews had only 1 resident and its population had shrunk to 300 residents. By 1870, Matthews had all but disappeared as a result of rapid growth in nearby Cary and Raleigh. Despite this decline however, Matthews remained an important community throughout much of the 19th century due to its unique architecture and rich history.

In 1830, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Nashville to Matthews after he won the U.S. presidential election against John Quincy Adams. Matthews became an important center of trade and commerce during the antebellum period with its warehouses, mills, and stores serving as hubs for transportation and commerce throughout central North Carolina.
