Matthews began as a small community near what is now downtown Matthews. In 1814, white settlers from Georgia established a trading post at what is now called "TheOld Store" in Matthews and named it after General James Wilkinson's birthplace, England. The first store was built on land granted to them by Sir Walter Raleigh for his colony of North Carolina. After several years of operation, the store burned down in 1820 due to an accident involving some of the settlers' livestock while they were hitching rides to another destination. In 1824, two men who had been driving their wagon train through Matthews sawed down a tree near where US-74 currently runs and walked across the road into town to build their house; this became known as "The Old House". This tree still stands today and is used as part of Town Hall Park's parkland
