Grant captured Mebane and most of its residents fled to Richmond, Virginia. Many of these former Confederates returned to Mebane after the war and helped maintain local support for the Union cause. The town was renamed Randolph Station in honor of Ulysses S. Grant on November 3, 1865. Mebane remained an important military community until World War II when it largely declined due to heavy artillery shelling from both sides during wartime activity in neighboring towns such as Gastonia and Hickory Grove. The United States Army Garrison in Mebane, North Carolina was established on December 12, 1775. The first U.S. Army troops arrived in the town on December 16th and began to garrison the fortifications. On January 3rd, 1776, General Benedict Arnold ordered the erection of a small cannon battery at Fort Mebane to protect the town from possible Cherokee attacks. The battery was manned by eight enlisted men and two cannons. In 1818, Congress passed an act providing for a military post in Mebane which would be known as Fort Mebane National Military Park. The park was originally located near what is now East Rowdy Road and West Street in Mebane but it moved to its present location after being donated by Mrs. Anna Thornton Hill (1821-1912). Today, the fort remains a popular tourist destination with schedule visits available year-round!

Mebane experienced significant growth during World War II due to its strategic location as an airfield for Allied forces inNorth Carolina and nearby Virginia. During that time, Mebane became known as one of the most important U.S.-occupied cities in North Carolina because it housed more than 50% of all American soldiers stationed in North Carolina during World War II. After the war ended, Mebane continued to grow rapidly with new businesses being opened up and residents moving into the city limits. This growth led to housing shortages which contributed to the current decline in population over the past few decades
