Mebane owes its name to Colonel John Mebane, a British military officer who fought in the American Revolution and enjoyed a period of prosperity during the late 18th century. Asheville businessman Charles Goodnight donated land for what became Mebane Village in 1875. By 1870, there were 587 residents living in 204 buildings within the village limits.
