Mint Hill is a small town located in the heart of Chatham County, North Carolina. The town was founded in 1792 by General James Moore and his wife, Elizabeth. The Moore family moved to mint hill from Wilmington, NC in 1793. In 1811, General Andrew Jackson established a post office at mint hill and named it after himself. Mint Hill's history can be traced back to its founding as a small hamlet on the banks of the Catawba River. The first settlers in what is now Mint Hill were farmers. They raised crops and sold them through local stores. By 1800, the population had increased to around 100 people and they started to build homes. By 1830, they had erected five buildings including a courthouse and jail. By 1840, there were ten families living in mint hill with an total population of 150 people. At that time, mint hill was part of Cherokee Nation and its residents paid their annual tribute to the Cherokee chief by bringing food (primarily corn) for his animals and children during wintertime. In 1865, Confederate soldiers burned down two houses in Mint Hill while escaping from Union forces loyal to President Abraham Lincoln following the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. This event has been cited as one of the most notorious attacks on civilians during the Civil War. Afterward, many citizens fled south into neighboring counties such as Orangeburg or Wilson County in order to avoid being caught up in Confederate military activity or worse - violence outbreaks throughout Chatham County following Reconstruction era policies implemented under Ulysses S Grant’s presidency had restored order but left much unpaved land open for development.). During World War II (1939-1945), Mint Hill played an important role as a munitions plant operated by BAE Systems Incorporated which produced shells used by Allied forces during World War II both before and after V-E Day on May 8th 1945 when Nazi Germany surrendered unconditionally at approximately 7pm eastern Standard Time ().
