The Mint Hill Historic District encompasses 113 buildings and 1 contributing structure in the town of Mint Hill. They are all period Federal style homes built from 1859 to 1911. The district includes two blocks of Main Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets and one block of Elm Street between Second and Third Streets. The Mint Hill School District includes four schools: Blue Ridge Elementary School, Downs Middle School, Jefferson Middle School (Salisbury), as well as South Orange High School which serves students in grades 10-12 from both Greenleaf Avenue east of US 14 and Summit Boulevard west of US 14. Mint Hill has a rich history dating back to its founding when settlers first arrived in what would become Durham County on November 5, 1776. One early settler named John Smithsaw some Native Americans near where present day MintHill stands during his reconnaissance trip from Cherokee Nation territory into this area looking for land grants or trading opportunities with them. Soon after English settlement began coming here too with Captain Hugh Lawson who received land here on October 20th 1777 by purchase from Chief Powhatan Jones following a fierce battle at White Marsh Creek near present day Chapel Hill on September 29th 1778). He set about building Fort Raleigh across James River from what is now downtown Wilmington which he renamed Elizabethtown after his wife Elizabeth Bartlett who had accompanied him on this important discovery trip upriver. Many later residents including Governor Tryon came here while serving in Indian Wars fighting against British forces under General George Washington including Battle at Cowpens Bridge October 9th 1780 – also known as “the decisive battle” – leading to many dead and wounded on both sides with over 100 killed including Genl Washington himself among those counted fatalities according to local historian James Fenton Johnston who said it was “the greatest defeat ever suffered by any side upon our continent” In 1781 Colonel Samuel Holden set up another military post called Holden's Station right outside modern day MintHill along Hwy 6 northbound just past Rutherford Road today’s Jackson road junction Harrison Ford Rd southbound) several miles northeast off modern day I-85 exit 143A(then called State Highway 30) across Five Forks River then turning east onto New Hope Pike now Old Millen Pike before reaching today’s intersection with SR 621 Atchison Ave W just past exit 134 Gwynedd Dr W now Browns Mills Rd . From here men could go out hunting either downriver or upstream where otters were common due to abundant shipping lanes passing through Onslow Bayou nearby From early times untilabout 1800 settlers seem not have been able to get their crops very far so they took advantage of many natural resources such as salt water fishing ponds dotting most parts of the county including areas around wherepresentday MintHill stands today like Catawba Lake , Trimonti Creek etc.. vast amountsof tobacco were produced too also making mint hills namesake one local industry still active today especially surrounding downtown Winston Salem NC ) By 1813 most everyone living within easy driving distance had moved away leaving only a few families behind mostly farmers but they started planting trees sooting mint hill bricklayer Elisha Goodloe built his house next door original bank building still standing today facing Market Street Directly opposite courthouse square Purcell St corner location given name then split into directionsprobably because first floor front window faced northwest direction then second floor front window faced southeast direction w/o view towards courthouse square

Mint Hill is a small town located in Durham County, North Carolina. The population was 1,569 at the 2000 census. Mint Hill is part of the Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Mint Hill were farmers who came from England in the mid-19th century. They arrived on horseback and founded a farm named Harcourtpton on the present site of Mint Hill in 1853. The original settler’s name was unknown, but they later adopted the name “Mint Hill” after their home country, Scotland. Mint Hill began to rapidly grow due to its strategic location as a stop on travelers’ route between Raleigh and Chapel Hill. By 1860, it had become one of the most important towns in Durham County. A school was built here in 1868 and soon became known as one of the best schools in eastern North Carolina for its high standards and excellence in teaching. In 1875, Mint Hill became an incorporated town with a government made up of aldermen and citizens elected by referendum vote. In 1918, during World War I, an armistice agreement was signed at Harcourtpton that ended hostilities between America and Great Britain including the Battle of Vimy Ridge which took place near MintHill on April 9th 1917.. This battle helped form the international reputation for this small town as being among "the bravest men" due to their courage during this difficult time period.. On October 3rd 1923 Rev Rufus Waddell officiated at what would be his last wedding at Lighthouse Inn before his death three months later; he had married Jennie Willingham two weeks prior.. After Rev Waddell's death many local residents donated property to create New Presbyterian Cemetery which stands today adjacent to Lighthouse Inn blocks away from where he once lived.. Today there are more than 500 residents living within walking distance of MintHill Elementary School (K-8), New Presbyterian Cemetery (formerly Lighthouse Inn), Lutheran Church (First Baptist) - services are offered daily except Thanksgiving Day & Christmas day from 7am-4pm., Post Office - open Monday thru Friday 8am-4pm., Stoneware Pottery - Adam Sitton opened his store doors for business on November 15th 1865 when no other potter did so in rural Durham County....Today Stoneware Pottery has been run by three generations of family members...Adam Sitton's great grandson continues operations Tuesday morning through Saturday afternoon 6pm until 4am
