Mint Hill, North Carolina is a small town in the Pisgah Mountains of eastern North Carolina. It is located on the banks of the Yadkin River and has been known for its military history since at least the Revolutionary War. The town was formed by combining two smaller towns, Mint Hill and Roanoke Rapids, in 1819. At that time, Mint Hill lay to the north of Roanoke Rapids and to the west of Pisgah National Forest. The town's first recorded mention comes from a letter written by General James Robertson in 1775. In that letter, he noted that there were two villages in Pisgah County named "Mint Hill" and "Rocky Mount". He added that both villages had been abandoned because they were too dangerous for settlers to live near. The first reference to Mint Hill as a place where soldiers could stay comes from an article published in 1801 by David Rankin. That article noted that Colonel John Sevier had built a fort at what is now called Fort Mitchell in nearby Rocky Mount. In 1819, when Mint Hill was created, it lay within boundaries set forth by Governor Tryon during his expedition against Tarheel Indians. Those boundaries included much of what is now western Cherokee County and northeastern Gaston County today. As such, Mint Hill played an important role in early American military history as well as being home to some of America's earliest artillery batteries (the first ever constructed in North Carolina). One significant event which took place at Mint Hill during this era was the Battle of Cowpens which occurred on April 14th, 1781. That battle resulted in one of America's most decisive victories against British forces and helped secure independence for the United States. Aftermaths included General Robert Easley becoming Commandant Generalof Militia for Western North Carolina; Patriots establishing their own government; enactment of laws regulating militia recruitment; establishment of mints throughout new colonies; increased trade with Great Britain; and commencement of construction on Capitol building (now Independence Hall).
