In 1814, General James Ketchum gave what is now Monroe to Major John Pope as part of a gift for his victory over English forces at Cowpens during the American Revolutionary War. After World War II, many businesses moved out of Monroe and replaced them with new buildings or opened their doors elsewhere in Pender County because of its proximity to Raleigh-Durham, NC and Chapel Hill, NC. One notable business that stayed until closing was Boston Pizza which reopened in 1984 after being vacated by its predecessor company Naples Pizza Company Inc., one of several pizza restaurants operating out of various strip malls throughout central North Carolina at that time. After more than 35 years as an anchor tenant in a mall anchored by Sears (now Kmart) across from Interstate 95 near exit 163B/C on US 301A/B),Boston Pizza closed down abruptly due to high competition from Greyhound Bus Lines' new headquarters adjacent to I-95 north of town which made it difficult for people to get into town for lunch without traveling long distances outside of Raleigh-Durham or Chapel Hill proper; this included access to local transportation within town limits which limited shopping opportunities available even for those who could afford it outside of these two larger cities. In May 2017, it was announced that Papa John's International would close all 653 Papa John's locations worldwide effective October 15th due to "weak demand." All but 43 stores were open when they closed while 362 locations remained open under new ownership as Ofir Cohen's Alma Mater Restaurants LLC [formerly known as Restaurant Brands International] assumed full management control beginning on November 5th with plans to close any remaining unprofitable stores[1][2].
