The townsite of Mooresville was platted in 1835 by James Moore and his brother-in-law David Gentry as part of the current Buncombe County municipality. The first Census of North Carolina taken in 1790 recorded a population of only 3 people living in this small town. The first store and school were built within a few years and by 1830 there were 8 residents living hereabouts. One reason for the slow growth may have been the lack of access to transportation or water resources which limited agricultural development opportunities on the peninsula that forms Buncombe County today. In 1881, when NC Agrarian Land Company acquired 640 acres (247 hectares) around present-day Mooresville from David Gentry, it became one of its main land holdings in eastern North Carolina and began developing roads, schools, churches and other infrastructure necessary for white settlement on what would become known as "The Ore Mountains." In 1915 Mooresville's original blacksmith shop became home to Burke Electric Cooperative before being torn down due to code violations just two years later.
