Morganton has a rich history dating back to 1792 when it was founded as an agricultural community by Scots-Irish immigrants. The town's first post office opened in 1876 and its first store in 1881. The town's name comes from the fact that Morganton had been given by General John Johnston to Colonel James McIntosh for his services during the American Revolution. In 1923, Morganton became a city and currently has a population of over 10,000 people. Morganton is home to several museums including the Morgantown Historical Museum and Library which contains artifacts from Morganton's early days until the present day; as well as Beaux Arts Center where local artists can display their work; and McCowan Park which features a fountain, central square and two playgrounds. There are also many restaurants and bars located throughout downtown Morganton.

Morganton is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg–Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Morganton was founded in 1811 as a small settlement on the western edge of present-day Cabarrus County by Methodist missionaries. It post office was established in 1816 and remained active until 1959. The local cotton plantations were gradually replaced by agriculture during the late 1800s and early 1900s; however, Morganton has seen significant industrial development in recent decades including a steelmaking plant and two tire companies. In recent years, Morganton's economy has been struggling due to increased competition from elsewhere within the region for jobs in both manufacturing and service industries. Morganton is located at (34.827182, -87.539889). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,446 people, 910 households, and 724 families residing in the town. The population density was 416 people per square mile (164/km²). There were 1,023 housing units at an average density of 209 per square mile (85/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 1% Pacific Islander; 0% from other races; and 1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 3%. The Census reported that 2,447 people lived here permanently while 548 transient residents lived here for less than six months each year between 2001-2002 through 2006-2007 inclusive

Morganton is a town in Randolph County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,828 at the 2010 census. Morganton is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as a small frontier community located on what is now known as Morganton Boulevard. In 1837, it became the location of the first courthouse in Randolph County when justices of the peace were organized from surrounding counties. A courthouse and jail were built in 1839 by local farmer John Ladd and hired hands under his direction. On December 12, 1865, during Confederate General Robert Ewell's attack on Fort Fisher outside Wilmington, some Union forces attacked and burned down Ladd's store in Morganton. The damage done to Ladd's business led to an increase in business for local farmers such as Andrew Kirkpatrick who rebuilt his store and named it "Ladd's Store." A post office was established at Morganton on October 15, 1881; and continued operations until 1934. The first settler in Morganton was John Witherspoon who arrived with traders from Tennessee in 1793 wagon trains traveling up the Catawba River along present day I-75 to purchase land which he named "Witherspoon Cove". Witherspoon donated 5 acres (2 ha) of land southeast of Morganton along what is now Mace Avenue to establish a home village called White Haven that would serve as a depot for goods brought into Randolph County by riverboats from New Bern through Wilmington and Brunswick before being transported across the Narrows Bridge into downtown Raleigh aboard steamboats or later by railroads arriving at Wakefield Factory Landing on Thursday eveningloads disembarking about dusk each week for market procurement purposes starting about 1800 BC
Morganton is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. Morganton is the second-largest town in Alamance County after Concord. It lies on the western bank of the Yadkin River and straddles its border with Randolph County to the east. Morganton was founded by George Wofford in 1792 as a landing place for planters moving up the Yadkin River from surrounding rural areas. Wofford's colonists were men who had come overland from Virginia or Georgia and were not admitted to any local churches until they moved into Morganton. A post office was established at Morganton in 1801, and it continued to serve until 1907. In 1833, a canal was built through Morgantown by Elijah Dickson to bring water from upstream to be used by farmers near Morgantown and elsewhere in Alamance County. The community name "Morganton" first appeared on maps around this time as part of that canal's designation. In 1845, John Southerland donated land at present-day Parkersburg for an ecclesiastical mission station called Mount Zion which would become known as Stonington Presbyterian Church (now First Baptist Church). The new church was completed in 1847 and named after Mount Zion within sight of Morganton Creek where it now stands. The townspeople developed heavy industry starting with cotton ginning during the late 1800s but declined thereafter due to competition from more advanced mills throughout Alamance County; however, some small businesses still operated until about 1970 when commercial property prices began declining rapidly throughout AlamANCE COUNTY due primarily to suburbanization and other economic changes within our county! As early as 1830 there were plans for a canal running through this area connecting Portsmouth/ New Bern (now Raleigh) with Elizabeth City/ Allston MA . This idea never came true because of funding challenges encountered along the way including lack of river access necessary for construction then as well today! However what we did have going on here between 1830-1850 is one of earliest townships formed in North Carolina !
