Morganton is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The coffee industry began to be developed in Morganton in the early 1800s. In 1892, Morganton became one of the first places in the country to produce coffee by mechanical methods. The first grocery store opened in Morganton in 1865 and it was called "The Grist Mill" because it ground corn for sale to farmers and consumers. In 1892, when Brewing Company of America (Boca Raton) decided to build its corporate headquarters here in Robeson County, they chose to locate their new headquarters on Market Street near Second Avenue. Morganton is a small town in Durham County, North Carolina. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. Morganton is part of the Chapel Hill–Durham metropolitan area. It is located on the eastern edge of Durham and has close ties to Duke University and Wake Forest University. Morganton's economy is based largely on agriculture, with some manufacturing also taking place. There are several schools in Morganton, including Eastman School of Business and Economics, East Carolina University-Greensboro, and Wake Technical Community College. Morganton's history dates back to 1837 when it was founded by Methodist Episcopal missionaries named Jameson and Pritchard as a retreat for nmigrants coming down the Atlantic Coast from Canada. The original post office was called "Morgantown". In 1892, it became part of Durham County when it was established along with other towns within that county. At that time, Morganton had a population of about 350 people; however, by 1920, its population had grown to over 1,000 people due in large part to World War I veterans returning home and starting businesses in the town. Today’s Morgantown contains many reminders of its early days – such as an old millstone still seen in downtown – as well as more recent development including new industries like software development and retail therapy services. Morganton is a town in Vance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to live in Morganton was Sarah Cook who arrived with her husband and six children in 1784. The town's name comes from Colonel John Morgan who donated land for the town to be established on February 7, 1811. Morganton had its start as a small market village known as "Butternut Grove". The first store opened there in 1814 and by 1824, Morganton had a post office and five churches. In 1827, the first school was built and by 1840 it had 12 students. Morganton grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its strategic location at an intersection of two important routes: one leading south to Durham City and another leading north to Wilmington (the future Wilmington Naval Shipyard). Morganton also developed significant commercial interests including lumbering, agriculture, banking and manufacturing until World War II when those activities were displaced by military production which continued until 1945. During World War II several munitions plants were constructed near Morganton including Pfeiffer munitions plant #1 which produced 20 million pounds of bombs annually; Lovett-Horn munitions plant which produced 5 million rounds of ammunition per day; Beecham munitions plant which produced 1 million rounds of ammunition per day; Bendix Arms Corporation armament company located at nearby Folsom Field) which manufactured radar antennas and other weapons components for use in Operation Overlord; Wirtz Chemical Company located adjacent to Hickory Army Ammunition Plant producing Zyklon B gas for use in concentration camps such as Auschwitz-Birkenau) which operated three large chemical plants – one near Morganton (operated from 1942 until 1945), one at Cleveland (operated from 1944 until 1946) and one at Greenville (operated from 1943 until 1945). All these plants employed up to 100% local labor with little or no outside involvement. Despite this success, during World War II many small towns throughout America went through difficult times due both to wartime shortages caused by Axis aggression abroad and national economic recession following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7 1941 - leaving many communities struggling financially after years of rapid growth. Some aspects that contributed directly or indirectly to this postwar Struggles include price controls instituted by Franklin D Roosevelt resulting in widespread rationing of goods while employment dropped precipitously because many people left post-war society for good reasons such as high costs of living or lack thereof; social media being introduced into schools prior to WW2 making it easier for parents everywhereto monitor their childrens' welfare without ever having to leave home; mechanization taking over some traditional agricultural jobs giving rise new competition for jobs unavailable before while reducing wages thereby exacerbating poverty among rural residents who still relied heavily on family farming practices.; community housing developments starting up after WWII often designed primarily for soldiers or their families rather than civilians providing few opportunities beyond low-income status quo ante ; restrictive covenants placed upon individual property rights that limited access not only by individuals but also municipalities within Vance County since early days ; restrictions placed upon speech/ assembly/ association organizing within certain geographic areas concurrent with a general feeling among Vance County Randolphians that they were second class citizens taxpayer "The postwar Struggles: A Case Study From Vance Countys Early History" By James Rourke
