Morrisville is a small town in Randolph County, North Carolina located on the banks of the Yadkin River. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. Morrisville is part of the Greensboro-Winston-Salem Combined Statistical Area. The first settler in Morrisville was John Crouch who arrived in 1776. In 1819, Nicholas Weems came to Morrisville and began to build a mill on the river. The mill built by Weems still stands today and produces flour and other products for local markets. In 1868, Abraham Hardin purchased land in Morrisville from Nicholas Weems and started to grow crops and build a house on his lot. Hardin became one of the original landowners in Randolph County and made Morrisville one of his most important settlements. In 1870, David Caldwell bought land near Morristown from Hardin for $200 cash which he used for farming until 1912 when he donated it to Randolph County for use as a county seat. In 1911, Morristown incorporated as a city under the name of “Morrisvile” with Wm Hickey as its first mayor. A year later, William Peebles joined forces with Harry Laughlin to purchase 4 lots adjoining Caldwell’s property south of town (now occupied by Chapel Hill) for $2,000 which they used as their home until 1927 when they moved into what is now known as Peebles House Annex #1 on North State Street east of Main Street. From 1927 until his death in 1945, Mr. Peebles was also Mayor of Morrisville During World War II Morristown served as an airfield providing vital services to Allied troops flying strategic missions over Germany duringOperation Market Garden Morrisvile experienced significant growth after World War II with the construction of new housing developments such as Park Place subdivision #1 (now called Park Avenue), Boulevard Heights subdivision #2 (now called Boulevard Drive), Parkway Manor subdivision #3 (now known as Parkway Center), Country Club Estates subdivision #4 (now known as Newmark Prairie), Asphalt Ridge subdivisions 5 through 7 (now known as Asphalt Ridge Estates). Morrisville is a small town in western North Carolina, United States. It is located on the eastern border of Moore County and the Moore River flows through it. The population was 1,992 at the 2010 census. Morrisville was founded in 1838 by Scots-Irish immigrants who came to North Carolina to work on plantations. The town was named for General James B. Morris, an American general during the Mexican–American War and its aftermath who fought in both engagements. Morrisville's first post office opened in 1839, and its first store was built in 1840. The town's first mayor was John Aiken. In 1865, Morrisville became the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the American Civil War when Confederate forces attacked Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant near New Bern, North Carolina. More than 3,000 men were killed or wounded in what is known as "The Battle of Morristown." The battle helped drive Yankees out of Morrisville and many other towns along the Moore River during Reconstruction efforts led by President Abraham Lincoln. During World War II, Morrisville played host to several military exercises including Operation Market Garden which saw Allied forces land on beaches adjacent to Germany in 1944; Operation Neptune's Spear which involved amphibious assaults against Japanese positions on Leyte Gulf; and Exercise–Daggerhead– which pitted U.S., British (codenamed Avalanche), Canadian ( codenamed Juno), and New Zealand (codenamed Pegasus) units against each other across five days in 1945 near Cape Hatteras Island off Virginia Beach, Virginia
Morrisville was founded in 1795 by James Morris and his wife, Susanna. The town became a part of North Carolina in 1827. It is the oldest community in the state and has been home to many notable people, including presidential candidate Ulysses S. Grant and first lady Eleanor Roosevelt.
