Morrisville is a town in Avery County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Morrisville is home to NC State University and member of both the American South Conference and American Baptist Convention. The community was founded in 1857 by Luther Stroud, a Methodist minister from Spartanburg County, South Carolina. Morrisville's first store opened in 1859 on Tryon Street. In 1862, Stroud donated land for a Lutheran church in Morrisville; construction began that year. The first pastor of the new church was Rev. G H Voigtman from Sparta, Tennessee. In 1865, when Avery County was divided into two parts based on racial lines, Morrisville became part of Avery County East while nearby Sparta became part of Avery County West. According to one account: "Butchers Block" still stands today as the only building in town that has not been destroyed by weather or vandalism over time (it currently houses an antique store). In 1870-71, a school district was formed out of what were then rural areas within Avery County; Morrisville served as its first stoplight. That same year saw the opening of the first Posts office west of Interstate 95 on Ulysses Road; it now serves as headquarters for Verizon Wireless' Raleigh division and also contains offices for state agencies including Health and Human Services and Taxation Services. A local post office operated at Morristown until 1943 when it moved to Garner with mail service being transferred to Spindletop Air Force Base during World War II before returning toMorristown after hostilities ended (the Garner post office closed May 14th 1976). From 1951 through 1957 there was only one telephone line going into town - phone service arrived via microwave technology later that decade! When TV services started up throughout much of America during those years (including what we now call “broadband”), cable came soon afterward...Morristown residents went out onto their front porch TVs and watched all types shows back then! One day they even had their own movie theater! By 1975 all but one streetlight downtown had gone out due to wire damage inflicted by Hurricane Floyd – so residents lighted up their streetlights themselves with candles or kerosene! Thankfully no homes were damaged too severely – just some lost power connections….morrisown remains one small town with many memories…besides shopping at our local Walmart which locals still refer to as “the big box” because it has always been open 24/7!!
