Mount Airy was founded by English settlers in 1795 and named for James Mount, an early settler. The first post office was established in 1819. The town has two hospitals and one elementary school. In 1951, the post office moved to Raleigh and the township changed its name to Raleigh-Durham Airport Township. It reverted back to Mount Airy Township in 1983. Raleigh-Durham Airport had its opening on October 1, 1961 and is now one of the largest airport complexes in North Carolina with over 25 acres of land involved.
