The Mount Holly Army National Guard (MHAG) was activated on December 1, 1941. The unit was originally created as the North Carolina Air National Guard to provide airlift and security for the state of North Carolina during World War II. On July 14, 1950, the MHAG was redesignated as the 2nd Infantry Division (North Carolina). Upon activation, the 2nd Infantry Division consisted of three brigades: brigade headquarters and two infantry brigades each commanded by a colonel with battalion-sized Headquarters and Service Company units. The brigade Combat Teams were also activated with three battalions each. Each battalion had an armored infantry company which operated in support of artillery batteries. As part of its Activation ceremonies on December 1st, 1951, Brigade HQunits moved from Chapel Hill to Fort Bragg in Fayetteville County NC in order to become operational as a Military Police Brigade under command of Lt Col Rufus H Buehler who became commanding officer January 1st 1952 when Maj Gen James Fenton retired after 43 years service with the regiment In 1957 squadron commanders were organized into wings while all other commands remained at brigade level until 1973 when Command Structure changes again within GHQ USArmy creating 3 major theater Commands Americas European Command Middle Eastern Command Pacific Command 1973 reorganization creates 4 Major Theater Commands along with their subordinate commands which remain unchanged through 1987 period Inactivated on September 15 1987 when Army consolidates all Departments into one organization
