Mount Holly is a small town in North Carolina, located on the Eastern Shore of Lake Norman. The population was 1,823 at the 2010 census. Mount Holly is part of Durham County. It is bordered by Chapel Hill to the south and east, Cary to the north, and Eden to the west. The first settler in what is now Mount Holly was Captain James Cook in 1772. He named it after his patron saint, St. Maurice of Saxony. In 1839, John Fenton built a mill on the southern edge of town which served as a stopping point for travelers — one stop before going into Durham County or into Catawba County further down the coast. In 1892, an act was passed by General Assembly authorizing schoolmaster Alfred Hoke to build a Normal School in Mount Holly with seven acres (27 ha) of land donated by Mrs. Florence Ellerbe and her husband Wm Hoke who also served as Superintendent of Schools for Durham County from 1886-1892; this school later became known as Appalachian State University (ASU). At its peak during World War II when there were over two thousand students at ASU, Mount Holly had more than just a normal school; it had an air-raided military garrison that included barracks and officers’ quarters for troops on maneuvers around nearby Hillsborough Peninsula outside Raleigh every week during peacetime! pupils were taken from their homes early each morning and driven 10 miles (16 km) eastward along US-19 where they boarded buses bound for Raleigh where they would attend classes inside Fort Raleigh until lunchtime then return home for dinner before being marched off to do their drill once again outsideFORT RALEIGH!!! Today only remnants remain visible of this once thriving community including evidence of barracks still standing today adjacent to Trinity Lutheran Church across US-19 from whence students originally departed!

In 2000, Mount Holly had an GDP of $127 million and it has since declined due to its rural location and lack of job opportunities. However, it remains an important agricultural center with many businesses based in the town including a paper mill which processes newsprint for magazines and newspapers; a feed company that supplies livestock ranchers with hay; two grocery stores; two banks; three churches; four schools; two hospitals; six medical clinics; three factories (two for textiles and one for aluminum); plus numerous smaller businesses such as a farm supply store and a tire dealership
