The Army has been deployed in different places throughout history. One of the first deployments was when the United States first organized as a country. The North Carolina militia was called to help with the military campaign against Mexico in 1846, and they were also called to fight at Fort Donelson in 1865. The New Bern garrison was activated on October 9th, 1861, and served until January 8th, 1862. It is interesting to note that this army deployment happened just two months after secession from the United States had occurred. Since then, there have been many different deployments by the Army. They have responded to various peacekeeping missions and wars in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe. New Bern, North Carolina is a city in the western part of the U.S. state of North Carolina. The population was 25,851 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth-largest city in North Carolina and one of its most populous cities. It is also home to the University of Southwestern NC and The Newbern School District. The area that would become New Bern was originally settled by English colonists who arrived in 1629 and named it "Newbern." After several years as an Indian village, they decided to move their colony to what is now eastern Durham County when they discovered land there that could be worked for crops and turned into a town site. The first white man to set foot in what is now New Bern was Captain John Smith on December 12, 1635. He built a small cabin on Cape Fear River near present day downtown New Bern and called it "Nova Scotia." In 1639 British troops burned down the cabin and replaced it with a larger structure which still stands today - First Presbyterian Church (now Christmastime Eve). In 1738 Samuel Johnston moved his family from James City County, Virginia to Charlotte County where he became lieutenant colonel of militia forces during King George's War (1737-1748). In 1745 he married Elizabeth Watts; she died soon after giving birth to their only child, Samuel Johnston Jr., who would grow up to become one of America's leading abolitionists. From 1750 until his death in 1824 Samuel Johnston chaired both houses of the General Assembly of North Carolina. In 1754 he founded Baptist churches throughout North Carolina including those in Wilmington (then Yorktown) and Chapel Hill (then Carrboro). His son Samuel Johnston III served as governor from 1834-1841 before becoming mayor of Raleigh from 1852-1858; during this time Raleigh saw dramatic growth as an important center for learning with many new colleges being established here including Duke University and UNC Chapel Hill
