Airforce gift history in Newton, North Carolina began with the founding of the Newton Air Force Base in 1947. The base served as a training ground for airmen from all over the United States. One of the first items purchased at the base was an airplane. The plane became known as "The Beechcraft Baron." In 1959, Newton AFB received its own jet aircraft-the McDonnell Douglas MD-80. It was during this time that Newton AFB became one of only a few military bases in the country to receive jets exclusively from McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Corporation. This relationship would continue through most of the 1990s and 2000s. In 1998, Newton AFB celebrated its 50th anniversary by welcoming three new Boeing 707 passenger planes into service: The Boeing 727-200 (now retired), The Boeing 747SP (now retired) and The Airbus A320neo (now retired). These planes were used for flyovers and other ceremonial purposes. Since then, many more gifts have been given to Newton AFB by both private individuals and government organizations alike. This heralded an era of missile development which would have a massive impact on American skies. 1950 saw the introduction of the Boeing B-47 Stratojet and this ushered in a new age of aerial warfare. 1953 saw USAF jets conducting their first mission into Cuban airspace as part of Operation Mongoose. 1966 saw the collapse of the Soviet Union and this led to a surge in military spending by both sides which would result in heavier bombings over Cuba throughout the 1990s and 2000s. In recent years, USAF airstrikes against ISIS have become common occurrences; however, these actions are often met with criticism from local populations who allege that airstrikes amount to war crimes or genocide.
The USAF gift history began on July 1, 1949 when the United States Air Force became a separate service. The USAF was originally known as the American Forces in Europe. On December 7, 1949 President Truman signed the National Security Act of 1947 which created the USAF. The act provided for a centralized Command and Control organization for all military forces in NATO and other allies. This organizational structure helped to create an air defense network that prevented enemy bombers from hitting American soil. On February 15, 1951 Lieutenant General Hoyt S Vandenberg assumed command of USAF Aerospace Defense Command (AEC). AEC was charged with providing Air Defense against any potential attack by Soviet Union or any other hostile nation using aerial warfare methods including missiles and aircraft. On October 16, 1952 LtGen Vandenberg made history when he became first Director-General of Intelligence Services within AEC. This position gave him direct control over all intelligence activities within AEC and allowed him to implement his vision for intelligence services in the postwar period. In 1957 General Vandenberg ordered development of a new fighter jet called Lockheed P-2V Neptune which would become America's first operational nuclear-armed fighter jet. The plane entered into production in 1958 and went on to be one of America's most successful weapons systems during the Cold War era. On January 10, 1959 Colonel John F McCloy was named Chief of Staff at Headquarters USAF after serving as Assistant Secretary of War for Intelligence during World War II and Deputy Director for Plans at CIA before that. McCloy had previously served as Assistant Secretary of State for Political Affairs under Presidents Franklin D Roosevelt and Harry S Truman prior to that time. He played an important role in shaping UPI's reporting operations throughout World War II before becoming its Senior Editor from 1945 until his retirement in 1970s while simultaneously holding several other posts including Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University School Of Advanced International Studies from 1946 until his death there on November 17, 1990 aged 94 years old
