Pinehurst is a small town located in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Gastonia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1892 by Confederate veterans and their families who had fled to Pinehurst from Winston-Salem. In 1902, Pinehurst became the first town in Cabarrus County to be incorporated as a village. The first post office in Pinehurst was established on November 7, 1892. That year, the community had a population of just six people. By 1920, however, the population had grown to over 100 people and by 1930 it had reached 200 people. In 1940, Pinehurst became one of the towns in Cabarrus County that were combined with Gastonia to form Winston-Salem–Charmichael Combined Statistical Area (CSSA). In that year, pinehurt sales began taking place at what is now PNC Arena for the first time and this led to an increase in development around town which also helped contribute to its current growth rate today.
