Pinehurst is a town in Wilson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,644 at the 2010 census. Pinehurst is located on the eastern edge of the Pisgah Mountains and bordered by Cherokee Nation to the north, Johnston County to the east, and Henderson County to the south. The first settler in what is now Pinehurst was John Smith who arrived in 1792. In 1818, Colonel James Moore purchased from Major General Thomas Nelson some land that extended into both Johnston and Henderson Counties. On November 5, 1819, a group of men led by Captain David Nance founded what would become known as "Pinehurst" on this tract of land. The town was originally named for Sir Rutherford Brougham's estate in England which he had visited while on his way home from serving as governor of Georgia in 1814-15. Although no evidence exists to support this claim there are several references to British visitors living or visiting Pinehurst during this time period including one letter written by Governor Tryon which mentions "a very fine family of English gentlemen who resides at [Pinehurst]" The name "Pinehurst" became official when it was adopted as part of Wilson county by an act passed December 15th, 1865. According to the 2000 census, there were 1,711 people residing withinWilsoncounty boundaries with a total population densityof . There were 898 households out of which 36% had children under the age of eighteen living with them , 60% were married couples living together , 4% had a female householder with no husband present , and 26% were non-families .
