Military gifts have been a part of Raleigh, North Carolina culture for many years. The first military gift in Raleigh was a flagstaff from the Confederate States Army. This flagstaff was given to the United States Military Academy at West Point by General Robert E. Lee and his wife, Elizabeth Cotten Woolridge-Lee. The town of Raleigh contributed two cannons to the Confederate army in 1861. These cannons were used as artillery against Union forces during the Civil War. After the Civil War, Raleigh became home to Fort Bragg and other military installations. The fort played an important role in fighting against Northern soldiers during Reconstruction in South Carolina and Georgia. In 1872, Congress appropriated money for construction of Fort Worth on Wake Island in order to protect shipping lanes between Florida and Carolina from Spanish warships. The fort was completed in 1875 and served as an important strategic location for naval operations along the coast of North America until it was decommissioned in 1938. During World War II, Raleigh residents donated more than 1,500 pieces of equipment and supplies to the Allied Forces including tanks, planes, artillery pieces, jeeps and boats along with food and water supplies. Many local businesses also volunteered their time or resources to help supply troops with basic needs such as gasoline and ammunition while they fought overseas. In 1945, after V-E Day (the surrender of Japan), Mayor James Yates dedicated a Victory Garden at City Hall which included provisions for 1 million citizens who had helped prepare meals, provide security or deliver goods throughout central North Carolina during World War II. After V-E Day, many servicemen returned home but there remained a large contingent of civilians who aided in war production through projects such as demolition work or civil engineering projects across town entrances into downtowns across North Carolina until late 1948 when these activities came under federal control under Project XXI beginning on May 6th 1951 known today as “National Defense” efforts within our current Department of Homeland Security! The town started as a tiny collection of log cabins on the edge of a marshy field, and grew rapidly due to its strategic location as a transportation corridor and trade center between North America and Europe.
