National guard gift history in Raleigh, North Carolina began with the creation of the National Guard in 1876. The National Guard was created to protect the citizens of North Carolina from violence and insurrection. The first units were raised in response to the American Civil War and were called into service in 1861. The Guard was disbanded after the war but was re-raised in 1865 as part of Reconstruction. After Reconstruction ended, the Guard served until 1971 when it was abolished by Congress. Today, there are no active National Guardsmen serving in North Carolina. However, there are a few hundred retired members living throughout the state. The origins of national guard gifts date back to 1876 when General James Longstreet ordered that all citizens be given arms for protection against insurrection and violence. This order led to the founding of local companies within each county and town across North Carolina. These companies were known as “units” because they consisted only of soldiers under military command (the unit form is still used today). By 1881, there had been 10 units raised statewide and these units were organized into brigades under brigade commanders who reported directly to General Longstreet. In 1965, General David Petraeus commissioned a study on how best to use national guardsmen within our society and this report became the basis for today’s system where individual companies or brigades exist statewide but are controlled by lieutenant colonel officers appointed by governors with recommendations from senior military officers

The National Guard in Raleigh, North Carolina has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s. The first organized militia unit in Raleigh was called the Company of Mounted Riflemen and Dragoons, which was formed on November 3, 1776. The company served as a light infantry regiment until it was disbanded on January 1, 1779. In 1846, the state of North Carolina established the Wake County Militia to provide support for military operations in eastern Wake County. This militia continued to be operational until 1871 when it was replaced by the National Guard. The first unit activated under the National Guard system in Raleigh was Battery D of North Carolina Volunteers at Fort Bragg on December 15, 1861. A few months later, Battery D fell victim to Confederate artillery fire and sustained heavy losses. In 1863-1864, Confederate soldiers from western Wake County began streaming into Raleigh and other parts of north Carolina to join their efforts against Union forces during the American Civil War. As a result of this influx of troops and equipment into northeast North Carolina, Battery D became one of only two units permanently assigned to duty guarding Federal installations within that county during that conflict. After hostilities ended in 1865 and federal troops were withdrawn from northeast North Carolina, most battery elements were reassigned elsewhere within the country or disbanded altogether. However, Battery D continued operations as an independent unit until its dissolution on October 14, 1872.
Raleigh is a city in the state of North Carolina, located on the Outer Banks of the Atlantic Ocean. The population was 153,651 in July 2013 according to the United States Census Bureau. Raleigh is the county seat for Wake County, and it is also the largest city by population within Durham County. The City of Raleigh was founded in 1835 as an inland port on Hatteras Island by General James Dobson and his force of Marines under Commodore John Pemberton. In 1871, Raleigh became a full-time city after its land area was increased by annexation from Moore County. The growth of Raleigh has been stimulated by transportation investments such as Interstate 95, which runs through town and provides access to larger metropolitan areas such as Charlotte or Atlanta; construction of new parks; and job creation in fields such as information technology, engineering, manufacturing and health care. Raleigh's architecture reflects many cultures that have contributed to its makeup: Italianate architecture from settler Giovanni da Nova (16th century); Georgian architecture from Sir George Gilbert Scott (1797-1867); Federal buildings designed by Benjamin Latrobe (1795-1868) including Fort Gaston (now NCSU campus), State Capitol Building and Medical Center; post-World War II downtown development dominated by high rises like Glenwood Place skyscraper completed in 1957; and modernist designs influenced by Edward Hopper (1902-1966)such as Blumenthal Hall at UNC Chapel Hill.

From then until 2002, the National Guard was divided into state militias and not part of the Army or Navy. This change was due to concerns over how much control each militia had over its members and their weapons. Today, there are about 112 million active duty Guardsmen across America plus 1 million reserve guardsmen. In 1932, President Franklin D. The National Guard has been a part of the United States since 1792. The first national guard unit was organized on July 24, 1792, under the authority of the First Congress. The guards were auxiliaries to the militia and were not professional soldiers. In 1812, a new National Guard Bureau was created and all Guards became military units with full 101st Infantry Division powers. On December 14, 1912, President Woodrow Wilson issued an order establishing the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) as a parallel program for the National Guard in order to prepare them for service in World War I. On May 10, 1917, General Order No. 89 established permanent duty status for Guardsmen in World War I and they were given honors such as being called “the best men in America” by General Pershing upon his return from Europe. After World War I ended there was an effort to disband all of America’s military forces but this never took place because it would have stopped Social Security payments to Guardsmen who had served in war or been drafted into military service. On October 16, 1951 President Harry S Truman declared that all Guardsmen must serve at least three years after their honorable discharge from active duty before being allowed to receive Social Security benefits. This policy continued until September 30th, 1957 when it was repealed due to increasing numbers of Guardsmen volunteering for non-military reasons including service in Vietnam during that time period

In 1949, Raleigh was designated as the capital of North Carolina again, but it reverted to its original name in 1982 after becoming part of South Carolina.
