This business was known as the Negro Coffee House and its roasts were also available from Italy. In 1951, entrepreneur Don Burch bought an abandoned mill site off Garner Road for $1,000 dollars and began to build what would become the current incarnation of Raleigh's first microbrewery, Local 6471 Brewing Company Ltd.. At first, Burch brewed only English-style ales; however over time he developed a reputation for his locally roasted Ethiopian coffees which became extremely popular among locals and tourists alike. In 1990 Local 6471 merged with another local microbrewery - NC State University's Carolina Brewery - to form Carolina Brew Works Inc., which continues today as one of the most successful small batch brewers in North Carolina!
