The first known barista in Reidsville was Nicholas Ziegler, who opened his first shop on Market Street. In 1827, John A. Hargrave started brewing coffee at his home on High Street. By 1840, there were five coffee houses in Reidsville with over 100 clients. In 1849, the first espresso machine was built in Reidsville by Giovanni Battista Giannini. By 1860, there were twelve coffee shops in Reidsville with over 350 customers! In 1865-1868, Abraham Lincoln served as Mayor of Reidsville and he is credited with bringing more people into the city to drink coffee than any other mayor before him!
Reidsville is a small town located in Rowan County, North Carolina. It was founded in 1837 by Captain John Reids and his wife Jane. The current town hall and courthouse were built in the early 20th century. Reidsville has a population of approximately 4,500 people. The first store in Reidsville was established on the corner of Main and Third Streets by Jno. S. Hogg in 1837. Captain John Reids, who founded the town, operated the store until his death in 1857. His widow Jane continued to operate the store until her death in 1905. The first black person to live in Reidsville was Anna Kapp who arrived here from Scotland in 1901. After she retired from working at the store, she opened an ice cream parlor called "Anna's Place" which operation continued until her death in 1971. The first post office was established here on December 12, 1838 by Colonel James Witherspoon with the name "Johnstown." On October 1st of each year since then, Mayor Ayrs Vining have proclaimed an outdoor holiday called "Johnstown Day" to commemorate this important event occurred within our community! In 1861-1863 Confederate soldiers moved into Reidsville during their forced migration across central North Carolina after being defeated at Bull Run Campaigns near Manassas Junction Maryland led by General Robert Ewell Jr., Sr.. Approximately one hundred civilians (mainly women and children) were taken as slaves and shipped off downriver to Durham County NC where they were auctioned off like livestock or used for agricultural labor on farms owned by wealthy planters back east! These forcible transfers are still remembered by many locals today as one of the most tragic chapters of local history! This sorry chapter ended when Union troops under General Ulysses S Grant marched into town square south of downtown on April 9 1865 surrounded only by bluecoats with drawn swords after weeks of hard fighting that resulted in no loss for either side! This action finally ended slavery throughout all of eastern North Carolina however it did not end racism which continues to this day especially among some African Americans living within our community!! Reidsville is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham–Chapel Hill Metropolitan Area. The town was founded by colonists from Scotland in 1798 and named for General James Reids, who fought in the American Revolution. The first store in Reidsville was opened by George Grayson in 1803. In 1824, John Fenton donated land to form what would become the village of Reidsville. A post office was established in Reidsville on December 9, 1830, and continued to be served until 1923. In 1848, David Dixon donated land to form the new town of Alamance after he left his family's plantation holdings near Chapel Hill for good. The town's first school was built on the site of present-day Lakewood Elementary School in 1849. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Reidsville; it had a flour mill and two stores. In 1865, local businessman Joshua Frye donated land to build what became Henderson High School; it was completed that same year and serves as today's high school campus. In 1870, local farmer Jno Hogg subdivided his farm into parcels and offered them for sale; these became known as "Hoggtown". In 1871–72 (the height of Prohibition), many citizens sold alcohol without permits so that they could avoid punishment from state authorities.; this contributed to Alamance County becoming one of the most prohibition-resistant counties in America during that era In 1922–23 (the height of World War II), Reidsville experienced an influx of military personnel due to Fort Bragg’s proximity to nearby Durham; this led to increased business interests within the community which helped drive its growth over time As more people moved into town during postwar years – some coming specifically because they had connections with military service or industry – schools started popping up all around town: First Presbyterian Church (1925), Henderson High School (1930) and Grady High School (1942). Today’s downtown area now includes three blocks long filled with businesses dating back centuries including The Hatchery (1892), Piggly Wiggly Store #2A( 1955) and Carr & Sons Department Store #2B( 1962). Additionally - but not limited thereto - several other historic buildings have been preserved or renovated such as South Carolina Arms Saloon/Gambling Hall( 1915), Ford Motor Company Factory Building( 1923) - home also currently housing Burlington Coat Factory chain store( 1925) - former Post Office BuildingFire Department Station 2A&2B- 1907 & 1927 respectively - Methodist Episcopal Church 1886 addition Also included are several houses used by various small businesses located throughout central Alamance County such as Blacksmith Shop #1C 1912 & 1913 & Machine Shop #2D 1928-. All told these buildings contain nearly 140 different years' worth of history!
