Coffee beans were grown on family farms near Reidsville before they were brought to town for processing. In 1872, John Hargrave opened the first modern grocery store in Reidsville. His store served as an important factor in the growth of the town and its coffee industry. By 1910, there had been six coffee houses operating in Reidsville, all of which sold roasted beans and brewed drinks. In 1919, Julius Rosenwald purchased the property that now includes Roebuck Coffee House and reopened it as a restaurant serving fresh-roasted coffee and baked goods. Over time, Rosenwald's restaurant has become one of Reidsville's most popular attractions with locals and tourists alike seeking out his delicious treats. Reidsville is a small town in Robeson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1875 by John and Martha Reids. It was named after James Buchanan Reids, one of the first settlers in what is now Robeson County. In 1902, the name of the town was changed to honor General Robert E. Lee. Reidsville is located northeast of Asheville on Interstate 40 and east of Johnson City on Old Henderson Highway (now US-421). According to the 2010 census, Reidsville has a total area of , all land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 4,814 people living in Reidsville; 3,969 were male and 1,974 female. The racial makeup of Reidsville as reported by the U.S. Census Bureau for that year was 96% White (of any race), 2% African American (of any race), 0% Native American/Alaska Native,[2] and 2% Asian Pacific Islander.[3] As of 2007[4], however,[5] according to resident report forms filed with the city clerk's office between 2006 and 2009,[6][7][8][9], only 82% white inhabitants remain within their community boundaries while 14% black residents have moved into or are transient residents within their community limits since 1997 when Statistics North Carolina began releasing Community Profile Data which includes demographic information about place
The first white person to live in Reidsville was John Reid, who moved there in 1792. The town began as a small cluster of homes around the banks of the Yadkin River. By 1830, Reidsville had developed into a small community with a Presbyterian church and several stores. In 1835, the bank on Church Street was destroyed by fire, which left the town without its financial center. But within a few years, business recovered and by 1840, Reidsville had 12 stores and two churches. In 1884, the population of Reidsville reached 2,000 people; but within ten years it had decreased to 1,500 people because of rural exodus and technological advances that made farming more efficient. By 1930, only 100 people lived in Reidsville; but due to new development along Interstate 95 and changes in American society (such as World War II), the population increased to 3,000 in 1960. In 1970-71 when North Carolina approved Amendment One creating its own state Constitution recognizing homosexuality as an equal right under law (the " statewide Briggs amendment"), much attention was given toReidsville because it would be one of just five communities directly affected by Amendment One's effects: All other communities were located east of Raleigh or west of Charlotte. As such, they were among the first cities across America to experience real-world Gay Liberation Movement activists living and campaigning amongst their residents. In reaction to this attention from outside observers - as well as some residents' personal homophobia - someactivity took place inside city limits during early days of gay activism there including protests against Proposition 8 (which eventually passed), anti-gay discrimination at local businesses (e.g.,discrimination against transgender individuals), and several damaging skirmishes between protesters and police officers/. Since then however activist energy has largely dissipated fromReidvillenot replaced with more mundane activities like tourism or economic development led by private interests rather than public institutions like Chamber Of Commerce
