Reidsville is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,824 at the 2010 census. The town was named for General James Epps Reids (1767-1840). It is located on U.S. Route 421 north of Chapel Hill. Reidsville is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area and is included in the Durham–Chapel Hill Combined Statistical Area. The town has a small shopping center, several schools and churches including First Baptist Church and St John's Episcopal Church, as well as a community center which serves mostly as an event space for local businesses and organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club. Highway 421 runs through Reidsville and connects it to both Chapel Hill to the east and Cary to the west. The first settler in Reidsville was James Epps Reids who arrived there on December 12, 1797 with his family from Scotland under the name of Grant or Grosvenor. He built a cabin on what is now State Road 421A just south of present day Interstate 95 exit 25A about two miles east of what is now downtown Reidsville according to oral history connected with nearby Chapel Hill by Rev A C Davidson (1912-2002) pastor of First Baptist Church from 1951 until his retirement in 2002 when he moved out of state permanently due to health concerns about living near an active mountain volcano! In 1801 Englishman John White came down river from British North America looking for land grants instead finding only many Negroes working for their white masters in agriculture! So upon hearing this news James Epps organized a group consisting mostly Scotsmen led by David J Elliott (1800-1876), son of Edinburgh trader/planter David Elliot who had settled in Surry County some years earlier along Brier Creek before moving into Alamance County with his family sometime prior to 1800 where they operated a successful rice plantation - making them one of early white settlers within Alamance County! Partially because James’s brother Andrew had been killed during Indian Wars fought between Cherokee Nation against American forces plus other factors including disease brought over by traders & travelers including William Petty via Wilmington he managed to get +$5000 grant from King George III “for us poor Scotsmen” so we were one step closer entering high society although our economy never really took off much like others around us did thanks largely to transportation network developments leading up primarily thereto & then post WW II suburbanization etc... In fact even today many people here still identify themselves primarily as Scotch Americans despite growing up & living here most their lives outside any formal connection whatsoever with either Clanranald or Clanricarde etc... But alas that all too often can be more difficult than simply enjoying lifealbeit Uncommonly so given current socio-economic conditions reminds me once again why I volunteered for military service during WWII @ 23 years old!!! Anyway back to story… After purchasing some more land adjoining Andrew’s original holdings #4 west on Rte 421 next door later renamed State Road 424 James Epps founded additional settlements called Kenedytown [Kenedy], Piedmont [Piedmont Mills] & finally Reidstown which became home also eventually (& long after)to Generals James M Craigie Milner Johnston Jr., USMC(Retd) USN&FDR&GORDON HUGHES JR.(DOD) thru their children RANDALL DAVIDSON MILNER JR.(ATTORNEY), JAMES DANIEL MILNER JR.(JUSTICE), STEPHEN DAVIDSON MILNER(RETIRED), KEITH DAVIDSON MILNER(ATTORNEY), LISA ANN MILNER(CHAPPAGE SCHOOL TEACHER) among many others… Today there are few if any remaining residents left scattered throughout various rural areas throughout Alamance, Durham Counties western Wakebrae Mountains foothills eastern Johnston County northeastern Buncombe County southwestern Hertfordshire Counties eastern Onslow County

Reidsville is a town in McDowell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,143 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area. Reidsville was named for John Reid, who surveyed and platified the land that presently forms the town in 1781. The first permanent settler arrived in 1786, when Major James Robertson and his family founded a cabin on what would later become known as Reid's Creek. In 1825, Colonel John Sledge moved his family to Reidsville from Spartanburg after purchasing 8 miles (12 km) of creek frontage from Reid. He named the community after himself and donated all of his holdings to the town government. The development of agriculture in McDowell County during the early 1800s led to increased demand for water supplies across county lines and so an irrigation canal was constructed through what is now Reidsville in 1824. One of the most important landmarks in Reidsville's history are its five churches – St Stephens Episcopal Church (founded 1836), First Baptist Church (1840), Methodist Episcopal Chapel (1860), PresbyterianChurch (1868), and African American Pentecostal Bible Temple (1927). The Baptists were among the earliest groups to arrive in this area; they established their first church here in 1840. Gothic Revival architecture became popular during this time period; many small towns throughout North Carolina adopted this style as their choice for their municipal buildings. The importance of transportation within McDowell County also played a role in shaping local demographics; by 1850, only 5% of residents lived within one mile (1 km) of either major highway exits or public transportation options such as trains or buses. This trend continued into modern times with Reidsville possessing only 1% of McDowell County's total population but 98% of its employment opportunities since 2000!
