The Coast Guard was started in 1915 as the Marine Patrol. The first coast guard cutter, USCGC H.L. Menard, was launched on July 4th, 1915 from New London, Connecticut and served until 1916 when she was decommissioned and scrapped. In 1917 the US Congress created the Coast Guard Reserve to provide a permanent coast guard service while the Navy built its own fleet of patrol boats. On December 14th, 1917 USCGC Sulivan collided with RCMS Britannia off Cape Elizabeth Light after chase by HMS Newcastle and both vessels were sunk. The Coast Guard Cutter HMCS Canopus (AO-2) was commissioned on January 1st 1918 at Portsmouth, Virginia with Lieutenant Commander R.J. MacLean in command and Lt.-Cdr John Poynter as first officer. In 1922 America’s entry into World War II led to a massive increase in Coast Guard activity along the Atlantic coast as coastal towns became vital supply points for troops fighting on two fronts; Europe and Asia Pacific Naval Forces (PACF). A new type of boat called an inflatable raft was developed to better pursue enemy submarines; this caused great concern among those who thought that long range patrols might be necessary given the lack of other assets available to respond quickly to emergencies offshore. As part of Operation Neptune’s Spear - an effort aimed at disrupting submarine traffic between Japan and Australia – USS Essex (CG-6) sighted a suspicious object off North Carolina’s Outer Banks on October 5th 1941 while patrolling near Jacksonville Beach; upon closer inspection it turned out to be a raft filled with explosives being towed by a Japanese submarine! This marked not only Essex’s first combat patrol but also her baptism into war as she assisted in sinking four Japanese submarines during her deployment which lasted until early 1942 when she returned home after completing repairs at Norfolk Naval Yard. On February 17th 1944 USS Mahan joined forces with USS Truro (PF-9) for an antisubmarine warfare mission against German U-boats operating off Newfoundland; this marks the first time ships from different services have been combined together during wartime operations! During their stay together Mahan suffered her second loss when one of her torpedoes detonated prematurely during launch causing all hands aboardMahanto abandon ship resulting in death toll above 30%!). After returning home Mahan underwent extensive repairs which included replacement of many parts inside and outside her hull including most of her superstructure including mainmast and masts! She recommissioned on June 6th 1945 under Captain James Fenton commanding unit NPY 869 & served through the end of World War II before being decommissioned on May 15th 1946 at Portsmouth Harbor.. She finally entered service again under Captain William Jaffrayich upon conversion to ATR-2(G)(D) class airboat tender/searchlight destroyer on November 16th 1948!! And so began another era for USCGC Roanoke Rapids… Today, just over 50 years later USCGC Roanoke Rapids continues providing valuable law enforcement services along our state's coastline while preserving our environment by reducing trash production offshore………..

The Roanoke Rapids area in North Carolina was first settled by white people in the early 17th century. The name “Rochester” was given to the community by one of its earliest settlers, John Rockefellers. The town was originally called Plantation Point on the James River, but it was renamed Roanoke Rapids after the rapids that run through the area. In 1814, a group of Englishmen led by Captain David Dixon founded a trading post at Roanoke Rapids and beganervaing trade with Native Americans. The post lasted for more than 20 years, until it was destroyed by Indian raiders in 1828. In addition to trading posts and settlements, some English colonists also developed farms in the area. Some of these farms became important later on, such as Gilead Farm which is now part of downtown Raleigh. At various times over the centuries, Roanoke Rapids has been home to a variety of cultures and languages. During its Early American Period (1607-1783), when this part of North Carolina was under British control, Pocahontas lived among the local Indians close to Rochester Bayou. When European settlement began in North Carolina proper (1745-1813), many Scots-Irish immigrants arrived here too and soon assimilated into local culture. Irish Catholics traditionally stayed in their own tiny enclave within town limits while Protestants made up most of the population; however, religious diversity eventually dissipated among all groups during waves of immigration following World War II. Afterward, steady German immigration replaced Protestant Huguenots as the dominant force among African Americans living throughout much of Upstate New York; however, no similar change occurred among African Americans living in Charlotte County until after World War III ended racial discrimination there. Today Roanoke Rapids remains an interesting mixture both historically and culturally due to its proximity to Raleigh – home not only to some Of America’s largest metropolises but also several universities – as well as its sharecropping heritage dating back to before statehood allowed farmers access to land plots large enough for agriculture without havingto bought or sold title deeds directly from individual landowners like those who had controlled earlier sections withinpresentdayRoanokeRapidstownNC
